EN-EL activities and status and post-mortem analysis during YETS (J. Devine)

The planned EN-EL works for the YETS 2017/2018 were the following:

  • 245: Cable connections to ME25. Completed during the YETS.
  • ME25: Installation of new diesel switchboard. Completed later.
  • BRF2: Power installation for TE/EPC converters. Completed later.
  • PSB (360): Lighting & Power replacement works. To be completed during LS2.
  • PSB (361): Lighting & Power replacement works. To be completed before LS2.

The delay on the activities was due to the fact that there were no operatives available from the contractor on the first day of schedule. Later on, there were problems with the IMPACT use and dose follow-up by the contractor. Additionally, there was a delay in the delivery of radiation resistant emergency lighting.

The mitigation plans for LS2 include early start dates to advance the work as much as possible before LS2, to bring teams on-board, and for the new staff to gain experience. The contractor and work site supervision will be enhanced by assigning more contract site supervisor roles.

Comments

  • B. Mikulec asked if they have a single contractor. J. Devine answered that yes since the cost of two was too high.
  • B. Mikulec commented that these issues are similar to the ones encountered already the previous year (where also mitigation steps were identified), and asked why we should be more confident that this time for LS2 things will go as planned. J. Devine answered that in this case, they will start the work in advance on site before the shutdown.
  • B. Mikulec asked if they have the same contractor than previous years. J. Devine answered that that was the case.
  • B. Mikulec asked if the contractors have penalties in case they don’t provide the personnel defined in the contract. J. Devine answered that only if they do not finish the work in time solely due to their fault, but that it is difficult to impose these penalties because of internal delays in equipment delivery at CERN.
  • B. Mikulec asked about the material supply. J. Devine answered that they still rely on their suppliers to deliver when they say they will since they cannot store all the material needed for LS2 on site.

Signal and DC cabling and de-cabling activities (G. Minchev Georgiev)

Linac4 connection

De-cabling (7 weeks, from 01-2019 to 03-2019, 818 cables)

  • It includes work in the Switchyard and Linac2 tunnel that affects the Linac4 connection.
  • All LIU cables should be disconnected and marked with purple by the owner on both ends before the starting date.

New action (2018-12-10): Marking of LIU cables by equipment owners on both ends before the start of LS2 and disconnection of cables immediately after the end of the 2018 run.

Cabling (7 + 2 weeks, 177 + 90 cables)

PSB

De-cabling (10 weeks, from 07-01-2019 to 15-03-2019, 2837 cables)

  • Most of the cables are related to RF.

Cabling (split in five campaign codes, total of 43.5 weeks, 3106 cables)

The cabling and de-cabling activities for the PSB will take around 53 weeks and there will be co-activity in the surface in April/May 2019 for the cabling activities. The schedules for both Linac4 and PSB are still in preparation.

Comments

  • B. Mikulec asked about the RF tests at the end of the year in localized areas. G. Minchev Georgiev answered that it was taken into account.
  • B. Mikulec asked about the Linac4 run (July - September 2019), where some equipment needs to be powered. G. Minchev Georgiev answered that in May 2019 they need to lock out everything for de-cabling, but that providing power for certain control and equipment racks should not be a problem.
  • B. Mikulec commented that other individual equipment tests would need to be done in 2020 and not before.
  • A. Berjillos Barranco commented that the estimates of 7 weeks of de-cabling and 9 weeks of cabling for the Linac4 connection don’t fit in the planning if they must be ready for the 1st of July.

Status of the ECRs and integration studies (T. Birtwistle, Y. Muttoni)

  • As previously reported, the ECRs can be now sent for approval without a fully completed integration study as long as they contain a minimum amount of information.
  • EN-ACE now uses a new tool called “track-it” to follow the integration studies and planning across the facilities. In the PSB all of the integration studies have been started.

Multiple groups

  • Add a new BPM on the BI line (upstream of BI.SMV10): under approval.
  • Modifications to the Booster extraction main unit and BT1/4.BVT10, BT2/3.DVT10 (up to the BPMs): the draft will be put under approval soon.
  • A-P. Bernades is following up on the possibility of modifying the access route to the injection/extraction regions, but a new budget needs to be found.

Integration status

  • Upgrade of the PS Booster extraction lines BT, BTM and BTP: models are needed from MSC, BI, STI, SMB, MME, BLMs, and vacuum.

TE-ABT

  • Replace kicker BT.KFA10: was approved, but integration missing.
  • Replace extraction kicker BEr.KFA14L1: still waiting for impedance studies.

Integration status

  • All integration studies are in progress and the follow-up is done by J.P. Corso.
  • Replace kicker BT.KFA10: validation of the 3D model is needed.

TE-MSC

  • Upgrade of the BHZ Main unit bending magnets (including injection bending magnet and reference magnet): missing.
  • Damping Resistors on PSB Bending and Quad Magnets: studies ongoing.

Integration status

  • The missing integration studies on the upgrade of the BHZ main unit bending magnets don’t block the approval of the document.

TE-EPC

  • No changes, all of the documents are either released or under approval.

BE-BI

  • New BLM installation in the LT, LTB and BI lines: The positions have been defined, but the document is still needed.
  • 8 Wire Scanners in the PSB 4L1 and 11L1. Fully approved.

Integration status

  • Relocation of BI.BTV30: update the model to the new BTV is needed.
  • New BPM on the BI line: validation of models is needed.

BE-RF

  • The New PS Booster RF System (Finemet Cavities): approved, waiting for the final integration validation.

Integration status:

  • Replacement vacuum chamber validation needed.

EN-STI

  • Removal of 2 beam stoppers (BI.STPFA and BI.STPSW) on the BI line. Final 3D models needed.
  • New PS Booster Absorber in Period 8. Final 3D models needed.

EN-CV

  • Ventilation system in the PS Booster. Delayed.
  • Consolidation of the Booster chilled water plant (b. 361). The approval is being discussed.
  • Consolidation of the Booster cooling plant. The approval is being discussed.

EN-ACE

  • New LBE line plus infrastructure. Some points need to be clarified.
  • Partial dismantling of Linac2. Ready, no showstoppers.
  • Connection of Linac4 to BHZ20. Ready, no showstoppers.

Comments

  • B. Mikulec asked if the connections might change for the PSB extraction septa transformers (as it was stated that no ECR was needed due to the maintained volume). J. Borburgh answered that the currents are very similar to the situation now and that this shouldn’t change.
  • B. Mikulec asked if something might change concerning the handling of the transformers. J. Borburgh and J-B. Bonnamy said that this should be checked. If this would be the case a very brief ECR might be required.
  • B. Mikulec asked if they will manage to finish the integration studies before the end of the year. Y. Muttoni answered that yes, that by October 2018 there should be a clear vision of the evolution of the integration studies. T. Birtwistle commented that the extraction lines from the PSB are a delicate point, and that the ECR for this should be a priority.

Next LIU-PSB meeting: 28th of August 2018 on the status of the LIU-PSB Safety File and next steps by Anne Funken and EN-CV activities and status by Gabor Petrika.

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
