Communications

LIU-PT Meeting

• Concerning the participation in IPAC’19 (Melbourne, Australia), LIU will be able to finance only one participant per machine due to the high cost of the trip. In order for the students to participate they will need to receive an IPAC grant. Please inform G. P. Di Giovanni if you have a suitable candidate to propose.
• J. Coupard reported that the WPA (Work Package Analysis) is advancing as foreseen. More documents are now available in EDMS, but feedback from some groups is still needed. In particular, while the EN-EL work has been finally quantified, it seems to be much larger than expected and does not fit in the planning. The situation is currently being analysed in detail for the different machines.
• Two ECRs for PSB were reviewed at the last PLI meeting. The one concerning the additional BPM in the BI Injection Line (EDMS 2003464) was accepted, although integration drawings are pending. The ECR concerning the replacement of the PS Booster Window Beam Scope with a new absorber/scraper (EDMS 1969773) needs to be reviewed again for impedance and vacuum.
• T. Birtwistle will not report on the status of the ECRs today, but he has seen almost all the drafts. The ECR concerning the BLMs in the LT-LTB-BI line is still missing.
• The tests of the POPS-B power converters will start at the beginning of September 2019.

Open actions

M. Buzio (2018-08-28): Investigate and report the options for implementing an online field measurement in the switching dipole BT.BHZ10.

• The magnet is still not here, but it should arrive next week. Action postponed to end of October.

I. Lamas (2018-06-19): Prepare the ECR for the PSB scraper/absorber describing both the dismantling of the current equipment and the installation of the new one.

• The ECR is circulating. Action closed.

I. Efthymiopoulos (2018-06-19): Make a list of starting points of the transfer lines to be sent for approval in an EDMS document.

• T. Dobers checked the files and they are now with I. Efthymiopoulos, who will cross-check them with his study versions of the layout database. Contact for update.

T. Dobers (2018-06-19): Produce the tilt measurement tool and perform measurements on spare / future magnets.

• The tilt measurement tool is in production and will make a test on a spare magnet. Action postponed to end of October.

Marking of LIU cables by equipment owners on both ends before the start of LS2 and disconnection of cables immediately after the end of the 2018 run.

• A time will be scheduled where the equipment owners can label the cables.

Status of the LIU-PSB Safety File and next steps (A. Funken)

The Safety Package (SP) concept was introduced to the safety file due to the extent of the project, which covers the upgrade of five accelerators. The LIU project has 15 SPs and 90 Work Packages (WPs). A Safety Package Coordinator (SPC) is appointed for each SP, acting as the technical link person for the corresponding SP.

The LIU-PSB Safety File (link to EDMS)

The LIU-PSB has four SPs and their associated SPCs:

• PSB Rings (G.P. Di Giovanni)
• Injection (W. Weterings)
• Extraction (J. Borburgh)
• Bldg 245 / POPS-B (F. Boattini)

Each SP has:

• An associated descriptive part, where the safety-relevance of each equipment or system has been identified (released).
• A dedicated Launch Safety Agreement (LSA), which is a document that details the conventional safety requirements applicable to the project. The compliance with the CERN safety rules and regulation needs to be demonstrated for all equipment (safety relevant and non-safety relevant).
• An operational part (EDMS node only, in progress).
• Records, experience, and monitoring parts (EDMS node only, in progress).

Additionally, there are two demonstrative parts associated to the PSB machine (PSB Rings, Injection and Extraction) and to building 245 being updated before submission to the PL. In the demonstrative part the hazards have been identified and the foreseen control measures listed, as well as a qualitative risk assessment for each equipment/system.

Safety Compliance of Equipment

Safety compliance of the LIU equipment has to be demonstrated by asking HSE for safety inspections and pre-visits by HSE experts for electrical equipment.

G. P. Di Giovanni circulated the files beginning of July for the electrical pre-visit and inspections. The Linac4 connection shall also be included, as well as the forecast for pressure inspections.  

Action: All the WP-holders are requested to provide the needed information to A. Funken by filling the forms attached in this Indico event as soon as possible (electrical and pressure inspections).

It is proposed that A. Funken coordinates this action after receiving the list of the LIU-PSB equipment responsibles. She will then organize dedicated meetings with HSE and the equipment groups to clarify and agree on the list of safety documents to be provided, in particular for the inspections

Comments

• B. Mikulec commented that depending on the mitigation measures that get accepted in the demonstrative part there might be additional work to be done, like pulling cables. This will incur in additional cost and impact on the schedule.
• G. P. Di Giovanni commented that the collection of the safety documentation as required by the LSAs needs to be coordinated as it is unfortunately not realistic to expect the WP-holders to organically provide it.
• W. Weterings commented that it might be difficult to get specifications or documentation from the manufacturer.
• A. Funken commented that she had no feedback from TE-MSC concerning the safety visits from HSE. A. Newborough commented that many magnets have not been delivered yet. A. Funken commented that the expected delivery time can be noted down in the Excel sheet.
• A reminder will be sent for the Linac4 connection inspections.

EN-CV activities and status (G. Petrika)

There are four Work Packages (WP) concerning the LIU-PSB:

• Cooling.
• Chilled Water.
• POPS cooling modification.
• Ventilation.

Cooling

Scope

• New cooling towers, new cooling stations, new electrical and control systems, and new instrumentation. The current cooling units will be removed and the platform needs to be reinforced and extended in building 237.
• Distribution network modifications. New piping is being installed for the RF cavities.
• Pressure rating upgrade (%20 higher flow). The pressure of the current system needs to be upgraded (flanges) along the distribution lines.

Status and next steps

• The consolidation and upgrade of the cooling plant for the PSB document (EDMS 1963310) will be released as soon as possible.
• The ECR, WPA, and WDP will be ready in September 2018.
• The 3D integration, P&ID & engineering specification, primary hydraulic study are finished and the tendering launched.
• The orders will be placed at the end of August 2018, detailed designs done between September 2018 and December 2018 and the on-site activities will start in December 2018.

Chilled Water

Scope

The chilled water plant is currently in building 361 (in the PSB building) and it will be moved to building 141.

• New production plant in building 141, new chillers, electrical and control system, new instrumentation.

Status and next steps

• The ECR and WPA will be ready in September 2018.
• The 3D integration and P&ID and engineering specification are finished and the tendering launched.
• The orders will be placed at the end of August 2018, detailed designs done between September 2018 and December 2018 and the on-site activities will start in November 2018.

POPS cooling modification

• The POPs SKID project has been completed.

Cancelled activities

• Ventilation consolidation.
• Heating system removal in the PSB tunnel.
• Removal and consolidation activities in B36.
• Chilled Water distribution consolidation for AHUs.
• Buffer tank consolidation.
• VSD for constant flow circuits.

Miscellaneous

• The EN-CV planning is still under discussion.
• Cooling will be active until the end of January since some users need it for equipment tests. Slots for the activities have been scheduled.
• The budget status is of 4.297.000 CHF in total.

Comments

• G. Petrika commented that the chillers are a redundant system and that this extra capacity can be used in the future to chill some other equipment, since they can be operated separately.
• W. Weterings asked if the cooling will be available for all users. G. Petrika answered that yes, but that the Finemet cavity tests have the priority.
• G. P. Di Giovanni asked if they have all the budget that they need. G. Petrika answered that they might have a 1-2% variation in the budget with conservative estimations, but they have contingency nor margin.

PSB and Linac4 Applications Development during LS2 (J-F. Comblin)

J.F. Comblin presented the list of applications being developed by the BE-OP-PSB group for the operation of the Linac4 and the PSB. Below a summary table:

• Longitudinal painting: specifications from BE-RF.
• Transverse painting: specifications from BE-ABP.
• POPS-B control: study of feasibility of using LSA and make rules.
• Tune control: study of feasibility of using LSA and make rules (BE-OP).
• Energy spread: reconstruction algorithm (Linac4).
• Laser emittance measurement: operational procedure and documentation (BE-BI).
• Writing missing application specifications. (J-F. Comblin).

Comments

• A. Lombardi commented that having the cruise control and energy painting in the same program is quite heavy. B. Mikulec commented that it was chosen like that because of the logical link between them, but that the implementation is not clear yet and will be discussed in the future.
• A. Lombardi suggested to do some intermediate applications and not to wait until the last moment.
• S. Albright asked which information is needed for the longitudinal painting. A. Lombardi answered that for every amplitude you have a different phase relation and energy spread. They need to know how much power to put in the debuncher to have the same phase.
• G. P. Di Giovanni asked when the decision will be taken with respect to the FESA class for the LASER. J-F. Comblin answered that he does not know yet.

Tour de table

• J-B. Bonnamy checked with C. Bertone if the handling of the transformer of the PSB extraction septa might change, a question raised in the LIU-PSB meeting #219. The transformer is the same size as the old one, so the handling should not be an issue. It would, nevertheless, be useful to have the drawings to check the lifting points or have the manufacturers’ handling procedure to prepare the installation.
