Approval of minutes

The minutes of the LIU-PSB WG #220 meeting were approved.

Communications

General

  • J. Coupard will replace A. Berjillos Barranco as the EN-ACE contact person for the Linac4-to-PSB connection. G. P. Di Giovanni thanked A. Berjillos Barranco for his excellent work.
  • The WP holders have to send the information concerning the electrical and pressure conformity of the equipment to A. Funken by filling the templates attached to this Indico event.
  • EN-ACE will coordinate the tagging of LIU cables by equipment owners before the de-cabling campaign starts. This activity will need dedicated time at the end of the 2018 run so it will be included in the general machine’s planning. It is recommended that the equipment owners start planning this activity on their own.
  • Concerning the participation in IPAC’19 (Melbourne, Australia), LIU will be able to finance only one participant per machine due to the high cost of the trip. In order for the students to participate they will need to receive an IPAC grant. Please inform G. P. Di Giovanni if you have a suitable candidate to propose.

LIU Beam Performance Meeting

  • The meeting was dedicated to review the progress and plans on the PSB emittance measurements and study of the emittance growth at PS injection.

LIU-PT meetings with dedicated equipment group

Open actions

I. Efthymiopoulos (2018-06-19): Make a list of starting points of the transfer lines to be sent for approval in an EDMS document.

  • I. Efthymiopoulos will review the document by the end of the month.

Conformity of equipment: needs for HSE pre-visits and initial inspections (A. Funken)

The status of the LIU-PSB safety file was presented at the LIU-PSB WG meeting #220. The information gathered for the electrical inspection can be found in the EDMS document 2024869.

Status of the electrical inspections

BE-RF

  • A pre-visit has been done for the Finemet cavities.
  • The EDMS reference of the pre-visit report and the requested date for the inspection in the tunnel before the installation are missing.

BE-BI

  • A date for the pre-visit in the laboratory by the HSE expert is missing (an approximate date is enough; it can be changed later).
  • If no inspection is required (including the equipment that is already installed) it needs to be communicated to HSE.

EN-CV

  • No feedback received, but the required information will be given in two weeks.

TE-ABT

  • A date for the pre-visit in the laboratory by the HSE expert is missing (an approximate date is enough; it can be changed later).

TE-EPC

  • A date for the pre-visit in the laboratory by the HSE expert is missing (an approximate date is enough; it can be changed later).

TE-MSC

  • A date for the pre-visit in the laboratory by the HSE expert is missing (an approximate date is enough; it can be changed later).
  • Concerning the Linac4-to-PSB connection, one pre-visit has been done for the magnet type PXMBHEJ (LT.BHZ20) (EDMS report 734048).

Status of the pressure inspections

The pressure inspections are carried out by HSE if the maximum allowable pressure of the equipment is above 0.5 bar, and by the owning organic unit if the maximum allowable pressure is equal or below 0.5 bar.

No feedback has been received so far.

Comments

  • A. Newborough commented that it was agreed with HSE that the magnets are not considered as a pressure vessel, so they do not need a pressure inspection.
  • A. Newborough commented that most of the magnets listed in the Excel file have been delivered, and that they are either in storage or in for magnetic measurements. The magnets will need to be brought back for inspection.

TE-MSC activities and status (A. Newborough)

A. Newborough presented all the Working Units (WU) related to the LIU-PSB project:

WU 91872 - Deliver Operational Main Bending Magnet shimming & Saturation modifications

  • The stainless-steel plates, shimming material, and fixings will be delivered during the winter of 2018, and the laminated plates in January 2019 since there was a delay.

WU 91870 - Deliver Operational Main Magnet cooling mods

  • Half of this WU was carried out during the Long Shutdown 1, where the connections and interlocks were upgraded.
  • The upgrade of the damping resistors is being detailed in the ECR PSB-M-EC-0001 document, currently under approval. A presentation will be done by F. Schmidt before the end of the year, summarizing the measurements and simulations performed on this topic.

WU 112579 - BI Bending (V) magnet

  • This magnet was delivered last year and the magnetic measurements can be found in the EDMS document 1816629.

WU 112582 - Quadrupole Magnets BT & BTP Quadrupoles

  • The pre-series has been delivered and the series delivery with the final chamfer is expected during the winter of 2019.
  • The ECR is currently under preparation by TE-ABT (W. Bartmann). There is some information missing on the vacuum chambers.

WU 112580 - BI Correctors

  • All magnets were delivered in 2016. Some magnetic measurements are to be repeated and the support structures will be ready by the end of September 2018.

WU 91873 - Deliver Operational Main BHZ Magnets (two yokes + 4 coil sets)

  • Half of the coils have been delivered, where two were rejected. The remaining coils will be delivered in 2019. All the yokes have been delivered.
  • The assembly of the first magnet is on-going and will be delivered for magnetic measurements by the end of October 2018.

WU 112581 - Bending Magnet BT.BHZ 10

  • One of the two magnets has been assembled. It had a 0.3 mm gap that could not be closed but is now solved, delivery by the end of September 2018.
  • A dedicated magnetic measurement system was designed for this magnet.
  • The ECR is currently under preparation by TE-ABT.

WU 136495 - Bending Magnet BTM.BHZ 10

  • The coils have been produced.
  • The yokes are non-conforming since their flatness is about 1 mm over 2 m length, which prevents from closing them. Negotiations are ongoing with the manufacturer concerning this topic. This magnet will need to be installed later on, approximately on July/August 2019. An attempt of closing the yoke could deform it. A. Newborough informed D. Hay about the delay as time should be allocated in the LS2 schedule for a later-than-anticipated installation of the BTM.BHZ10 magnet.
  • A dedicated magnetic measurement system was designed for this magnet.
  • The ECR is currently under preparation by TE-ABT.

WU 91874 - Other Magnets BT, BTP&BTM

  • The coils are being produced at TESLA UK and the yokes are being fabricated at CERN.
  • The price of production was beyond expected.
  • The ECR is currently under preparation by TE-ABT.

WU 112583 - Installation and FSU during LS2

  • All the magnets have been received and the support structures are expected by the end of September. The field quality of the magnets is very good.

Comments

  • G. P. Di Giovanni asked about the delivery date of the new BTM.BHZ10 magnet. A. Newborough answered that they are following it up closely with TE-MSC at several levels of hierarchy, but he does not know exactly. The magnet will need to be transported later on into the tunnel. He contacted the company and they should come back with an answer soon. D. Hay has been already informed about this delay.
  • V. Forte asked A. Newborough if they are planning to perform magnetic measurements on the QNO20 and QNO30 quadrupoles in the BT line, since they are relying on very old measurements and they are experiencing some field errors. A. Newborough answered that the quadrupole QNO40 will be extracted from the tunnel and could be measured more in detail. Concerning the quadrupoles QNO10,20,30 A. Newborough said that they still work in the linear range. G. P. Di Giovanni commented that, in any case, they would be very useful measurements.
  • B. Mikulec reminded A. Newborough to please perform an endoscopy of the BR.BHZ52 during LS2, as there have been unexplained beam losses in operation in the last two years. One of the suspects is the scraper, which could have physically moved for unknown reasons. A. Newborough reminded B. Mikulec that this is a vacuum activity.
  • S. Albright asked if any of the ECRs will affect the vacuum, and therefore the impedance. A. Newborough answered that they will not.

AOB

EVM report (S. Prodon)

  • The cost variance is positive and the project is two months behind the cost and schedule review baseline, which is probably due to lack of reporting during the summer holidays. Schedule variances are observed in almost all the groups.
  • Regarding the CERN Expenditure Tracking for the LIU-PSB project, there is currently 55% of charges and 94% of commitment versus the 55% of charges and 84% commitment standard averages at the end of September.
  • There was a problem with the budget code of EPC that needed manual correction.
  • An extract of the EVM data will be done the 14th of September 2018 for the presentation of F. Bordry to the council. It is important that the EVM reporting is up to date.
  • The EVM data will be used to adjust the start and end dates of the deliverables. All the LIU jobs above 20kCHF are eligible for the MME partial invoicing plan, where the charging will be according to the advancement of the project. This is implemented to avoid having big discrepancies between the charges and commitment.

Tour de table

  • J. A. Ferreira Somoza reported that the BTP line drawings are ready.
  • The CO request for the wire scanners has been received.

Next LIU-PSB meeting: 25th of September 2018 on the TE-VSC activities and status by J. A. Ferreira Somoza.

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
