Comments on 5d N=1 SCFTs and their gauge theory phases

5d N=1 SCFTs have attracted renewed attention recently. Our main tools for understanding them are string theory constructions, combined with field theory arguments when the SCFTs have relevant deformations that trigger an RG flow to IR-free 5d gauge theories.

I will review our current understanding of those theories, and discuss some work in progress that explores their gauge theory deformations more systematically, using an M-theory engineering point-of-view.
