Description

The CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings and Gauge Theory is the continuation of the yearly training school of the former EC-RTN string network "Constituents, Fundamental Forces and Symmetries of the Universe". The 2019 edition of the school is supported and organized by the CERN Theory Department, and will take place from Monday 4th February to Friday 8th February, at CERN.

The school will cover the following topics: Entanglement entropy in QFT, Conformal Bootstrap, Scattering amplitudes and constraints on low energy effective field theories, the Swampland vs Landscape Conjectures, Geometric Engineering in String Theory.

Previous schools in this series were organized in 2005 at SISSA in Trieste, and in 2006, 2007, 2008, 20092010, 20112012, 2013, 2014, 201520162017 and 2018 at CERN, Geneva. The school is funded by the CERN Theory Department, and the Arnold Sommerfeld Center at Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich.

As its predecessors, this school is meant primarily for training of doctoral students and young postdoctoral researchers in recent developments in theoretical high-energy physics and string theory. The programme of the school will consist of five series of pedagogical lectures, complemented by discussion sessions in the afternoons.

The study of black holes has revealed a deep connection between quantum information and spacetime geometry. Precise formulations of this conjectural relation have recently led to new insights in Quantum Field Theory. An important example is the QNEC, a lower bound on the local energy density in terms of the flow of nonlocal information. These results pertain to an unexplored, but accessible regime of the Standard Model: quantum coherent, relativistic, and low energy. They are most easily understood as implications of specific conjectures about quantum gravity, so their experimental tests at low energies would probe our hypotheses about unification at the highest energy scales.
