As part of its mission to educate and engage the public in science, CERN is launching the Science Gateway, a new facility dedicated to scientific education and outreach.
The Science Gateway will be hosted in a new, iconic building on CERN’s Meyrin site, designed by world-renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop, architects. Construction is planned to start in 2020 and be completed in 2022.
The purpose of the project is to create a hub for scientific education and culture in line with CERN's mission to share knowledge and technology with society, and to inspire the younger generations with the beauty of science. Aimed at engaging audiences of all ages, the Science Gateway will include inspirational exhibition spaces, laboratories for hands-on scientific experiments for students from primary to high-school level, and a large amphitheatre to host science events for experts and many other audiences.
The Science Gateway will be funded through donations and will receive a special contribution from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project on Science and Technology dissemination and to honor Sergio Marchionne, its long-serving CEO who recently passed away.
On Monday, 8 April, CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti will host a media event and unveil the project together with Renzo Piano, Antonio Hodgers, President of the State Council of Republic and Canton of Geneva and FCA Chairman John Elkann, among other donors.

Dans le cadre de sa mission en matière d'éducation et de promotion de la science auprès du public, le CERN lance le Portail de la science, un nouveau centre consacré à l'éducation et à la communication scientifiques à destination du grand public.
Le Portail de la science sera hébergé dans un nouveau bâtiment emblématique, conçu par le cabinet d’architectes de renommée internationale Renzo Piano Building Workshop, et sera situé sur le site de Meyrin du CERN. Il est prévu que sa construction commence en 2020 et se termine en 2022.
L'objectif du projet est de créer un pôle de culture scientifique et d'échange, conformément à la mission du CERN visant à faire bénéficier la société de son savoir-faire et de ses technologies, et à sensibiliser la jeune génération à la beauté de la science. Conçu comme un lieu d'accueil destiné au grand public, tous âges confondus, le Portail de la science comprendra des zones d'exposition, des laboratoires expérimentaux à des fins éducatives, proposant des activités pratiques aux enfants et aux élèves du primaire et du secondaire, ainsi qu'un grand amphithéâtre où se tiendront des événements pour les experts et bien d’autres publics.
Le Portail de la science sera financé par des dons et recevra une contribution spéciale de Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), dans le cadre d'un projet sur la diffusion de la science et de la technologie au titre de la responsabilité sociale de l'entreprise, afin d’honorer la mémoire de son ancien président, Sergio Marchionne, récemment décédé.
Le 8 avril, la directrice générale du CERN, Mme Fabiola Gianotti, aura le plaisir d'accueillir un événement média et de dévoiler le projet aux côtés de Renzo Piano, d'Antonio Hodgers, président du Conseil d’État de la République et du Canton de Genève, et, parmi les principaux donateurs, du président de Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, M. John Elkann.
