Detector Seminar

The FASER Detector - Looking forward to new physics

by Jamie Boyd (CERN)

Europe/Zurich
Description

This seminar presents the motivation, design and status of the FASER detector as well as the expected physics reach. FASER is a small experiment designed to search for light weakly-interacting new particles in the very forward region at the LHC. It was approved in early 2019 to be installed into the LHC tunnel during Long Shutdown 2. The detector consists of a scintillator system, a decay volume, a magnetic spectrometer, and a calorimeter. In addition a new system, FASERnu, is an emulsion/tungsten detector designed to measure neutrino interactions at the LHC for the first time.
