Measurement of Magnetic Fields – a Review

by Felix Bergsma (CERN), Hans Danielsson (CERN), Pierre-Ange Giudici (CERN)

Europe/Zurich
Description

The EP department has a long tradition with the support of Magnet-Field mapping for High-Energy Physics experiments.  This seminar will give an overview of the activities on this subject in EP-DT, in particular on measurements of magnetic fields where EP-DT has played and continues to play a major role. The seminar will cover the following subjects:

  • Short introduction to magnetic fields
  • The use of magnets in HighEnergy Physics experiments and a few examples
  • The principles of Hallprobes and how they are used in magnetic field mapping
  • Design and use of magnetic field measurement benches, including recent improvements in technology
  • Some examples from known experiments, both inside and outside CERN, e.g. AMS, ATLAS, NA62, T2K,……

Finally, some examples of coil winding and magnet fabrication for experiments within the EP-DT group will be given.
