FASER LS2 work coordination meeting

This meeting is to start to discuss possible plans following the partial CERN re-start

Introduction (Jamie):
- FASER activities have re started in CERN labs
* So far progressing well despite having only one person in each lab
* Will have to see how this proceeds
- The magnet construction is progressing well
* 1/4 of the first magnet is done and a first field measurement showed everything is consistent
* The aim is to transport the first magnet to EHN1 and install it on the baseplate there in mid-July
* Installation in EHN1 will have to be done without a crane unlike TI12
- The baseplate installation in TI12 will be done in about two weeks
* Transport support will be needed to move the baseplates and grout from EHN1 to TI12
- Two FASER racks should be installed in the next two weeks as well
* One rack is already in PM15 and the second one should arrive in the next days
* It was asked who will do the rack installation - Jamie will follow up on this
- The overall LS2/Run 3 schedule has been revised for COVID-19 induced delays
* This means Run 3 will only start in November 2021 or February, i.e. at least 6 months later
* The extra time will by default be used to train LHC magnets for higher energy, precluding access to TI12
and therefore not necessarily giving more time for FASER completion
* Access during 2021 will be coordinated by the beam operations team
* They are not keen to give too much access, but there might be some additional time in May/June 2021
* For now will stay with baseline plan of installing full FASER detector in October/November 2020
- For FASERnu there was a plan to install a fourth tracker station (interface detector) in the 21/22 EYETS
* This allows to combine tracks in the emulsion detector and the active detectors
* Funding has been secured and given the delayed Run 3 schedule,
it would be preferable to also install this during LS2
* It is still under study if the same tracker station layout is sufficient or if a different scheme is necessary,
so it will not be ready to install in 2020
* It is not expected that more services will be required, but it will require additional cables and pipes to
be routed between racks and FASER, which should be included in the current cable tray planning
- In EHN1, the next step is to install the top plate in the next days and to test at end of June
the construction of the upper support frame
* Support frame will come with experts from University of Mainz
Baseplate installation (Franck):
- In EHN1 it took one day to setup and align the baseplate using jack screws and the alignment system
to 50micron in the critical points near the jack screws
* This is much better than needed
* In TI12 it will also be necessary to align everything wrt the LOS
- The first grouting attempt was halted due to not fluid enough grout
- It was retried successfully a few days later after small scale testing which improved the procedures
* Procedure for getting right fluidity and avoiding dusts was found, but needs to be documented
- The grout is poured into a single place and other holes used to track grout and vent air as grout is flowing
- The grouting itself takes ~2 hours and has to be done in one go to avoid drying out the grout
* In EHN1 one had to start cleaning within 1/2 hour, but with better protection this should be fine
- It takes about one week for grout to dry and get full strength
- The baseplate was observed to be lifting during grouting
* Will need to add loading during grouting
* will also need to add shimming in places where there are no jack screws
- Overall looks good, but in a few places there seem to be a gap between the base plate and the grout
- The follow-up survey, confirmed that there is a lift of the base plate in places
* For TI12 should likely do the survey after loads are added
* Camille and Franck were both surprised how much the plate moved - so more loading is for sure needed,
but it has to be done so as to avoid "waves" in the baseplate
- Franck will send theoretical position wrt the LOS to Camille after a cross check with Liam
- Camille noted that there is an update coming to the MadX file which corrects a 0.5mm shift
- Francisco asked how one can be sure there are no areas underneath the plate without grout
* The grout injection is done from the middle hole only one could see it flow under all venting holes
* One can also check from sound by knocking on the plate
* Small holes cannot be excluded, but should not be present where most of the weight is
- It was discussed to add some small amount of concrete around the baseplate to protecting
the edge of the grout
* Details of this remains to be worked out
WP2 (Jonathan)
- The work in TI12 restarted on June 2
- A smoke test was successful after some small SAS repairs
- Concrete was removed in the required places and resurfaced
- The first survey showed the trench to be within 5mm of design everywhere
* This is considered to be sufficient
- The surface was subsequently sanded to get a uniform surface
* This will further increase trench size by 1-2mm
- The material in UJ12/TI12 will be moved out June 12 to make space for the rail installation
as the UPR SAS is no longer blocking transport access to TI12
- Work will be finished June 12 with a final scan of the trench
WP3 (Liam)
- The cable tray study has been completed
* Proposed to move racks closer to FASER by 45cm
* Agreed, but Liam will check with EN/CV that this does not interfere with the chiller
- Design of handrail and FASERnu trench cover is on-going
* Fabrication and installation will start at the beginning of August
- The EN-HE rail installation is planned for the week of June 15
* It needs to be understood to what extent the SAS has to be dismantled
for access with the transport tractor
* Francisco and Liam to follow up with Caterina
- The rack supports have been fabricated and will be installed after the rails
- The VIC for the baseplate installation will be held June 22
* Will need to coordinate the baseplate installation with EN-HE as
crane will be used to lift baseplates in place
- EN-EL expects to start July 7, but will need a site visit soon with the contractor
- EN-CV is tentatively scheduled to start July 21
- The fibers schedule is still under confirmations
- Francisco noted that the aim is to finish the service installation work in TI12 by mid-August
as access will then be blocked by electrical tests
