Abstract:
During more than 30 years I gave courses on micro computer systems for developing countries. During these courses I made many friends and Nii Quaynor, my Ghanaian friend, a former student at one of the very first of these courses, invited me to set up a micro computer laboratory and to give a course on embedded systems at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana. Educated in the USA he had gone back to Ghana and successfully set up his own computer network company. Now he is a very well known computer expert highly respected in the whole of West Africa and still very active in Computer Science education. It was him to set up the Computer Science department at UCC.
This first lecture will present the micro computer laboratory and the basic layout of the course, a mixture of lectures and hands-on exercises, where the exercises made up for the major part of the course. It will show the hardware and software solutions selected as well as the WEB based documentation system used.
A major goal was to make the course sustainable and to pass on knowledge to local lecturers foreseen to take over and develop the laboratory and the course in the coming years.
The lecture will not only treat technical issues but also talk about the experience of a European totally immersed in African life.
