ABP-HSS
HSS meeting 1/7/2020 https://indico.cern.ch/event/933554/
1st meeting chaired by the new SL Rogelio Tomas.
Introduction, Rogelio
Starting today with a casual meeting, starting looking backwards, showing pictures.
Individual discussions started.
Thanking Massimo who did this for 15 years, currently longest in service in this group.
Management encourages change / turnover.
How many meetings should we have: Current frequency of 2 meetings / month appears adequate.
Frank Zimmermann, review of the section and group, slides
Starting with memories from 1990.
Photo from BNL October 1992 meeting.
Henon map studies by Massimo, published 1994, trapped particles in islands of phase space,
Halo 2003 meeting.
Section changed names, LOC for LHC Optics and Commissioning, LCU for LHC Commissioning and Upgrade,
to HSS for Hadron Synchrotrons Single-particle effects.
The number of participants with students included increased substantially and exceeds now the total number of members in the group 15 or so years ago,
Status of non-linear beam dynamics studies, Massimo, slides.
Beam lifetime and beam distribution evolution.
Used for advanced beam manipulations.
Multi-turn resonant extraction used in PS.
Use of exciters, typically AC dipole, and using the tune change with amplitude in non-linear systems.
Also studied in light sources like BESSY II.
Possibility of different momentum compaction in resonance islands resulting in different bunch length, and possibility of top up injection.
Use of 2D non-linear resonances.
Possibility of alternative schemes to perform transition crossing.
Possibility of non-gaussian, hallow beams, useful for scrubbing.
Working on more precise analysis of change with amplitude using turn-by-turn data.
Dynamic aperture (DA) and beam lifetime.
DA scales with a well defined scaling law as a function of turn number.
Diffusion, Nekhoroshev theorem, Fokker-Planck equation approaches.
Studies planned in context of hollow electron lens and studies of detuning with momentum.
Next meeting planned in two weeks, 15 July.
