ABP-HSS section meeting

→ Europe/Zurich

HSS news, Rogelio:
Kind of minimal minutes are prepared by Helmut and will be posted directly on indico shortly after the meeting,
please check and add/correct if needed.
For news concerning Covid, European strategy and LS2 schedule, see Rogelio slides.
Concerning COVID CERN is moving towards a situation where a presence at CERN is encouraged.
Our HSS expertise will be important for many of the European Strategy options.
There has been a muon collider collaboration meeting on 3 July, https://indico.cern.ch/event/930508/
and Michael Benedikt is expected to report news concerning FCC in the FCC-ee Optics Design Meeting
on Friday https://indico.cern.ch/event/936623/
Stefano reminded that also Plasma acceleration studies were recommended (slides have been updated) and Helmut that an e+e- Higgs factory has the highest priority as the next collider. Rogelio replied that indeed FCC-ee has been listed as second after LIU+HL-LHC and CLIC third on the slides.

Round table, general news:
Codes : good progress on wire collimators both on MAD-X (element update by Tobias, Makethin by Helmut)
and SixTrack sides. Laurent will discuss soon with Tobias when to aim for a new MAD-X release.
Riccardo said that as a result of bug fixes and updates simulations concerning SPS crab cavities in RUN2 have to be performed differently (thanks to Tobias and Ewen for anslysis/fixes). Wire collimators for SixTrack are well advanced. Details like the role of the length parameter should still be clarified. The aim is to have a new release ready over summer.

Concerning injectors, Alex said there is good progress in hardware commissioning and for the optics repository. He could present this in the next ABP information meeting.

Rogelio said that there was no recent OMC meeting and that he passes on the organization of OMC meetings to Tobias.

Collimation, Stefano:
A dedicated collimation upgrade meeting is planned for the coming Monday afternoon https://indico.cern.ch/event/937164/ on crystal collimation simulations using different codes including FLUKA and GEANT4.
Stefano showed two slides on Ion losses/lifetime considerations.
Without 11T magnets and upgraded collimation, there is a risk that a non-negligible fraction of the heavy ion fills in RUN3 would be dumped by losses. He recommends to also work on upgrades involving crystal collimation as possible backup to 11T.

The next HSS meeting is planned in two weeks.
