Abstract: This seminar focuses on the theoretical development of a method to solve complex structural problems, such as the mechanics of a two-dimensional cross section of a superconducting magnet, based on the concepts of geometrical interference and elastic strain energy. The general analytical formulation aims to be applicable to any type of superconducting magnet structure. The case of the collared coils of the cos 𝜃 11 T dipole is here explored as an application example. The challenges of geometrically measuring a coil are also discussed in depth. Furthermore, the implications of the analytical formulation are explored, leading to the collar internal equilibrium equation, geometrical non-equivalence principle, and dissociation between collar and pole stress in relation to critical strain-stress within the coil.
