ABP-HSS Section meeting
HSS news, Rogelio, slides
Short minutes of the last meeting are on indico (prepared by Helmut).
Concerning COVID : keep yourself informed by regularly reading the CERN news.
The situation evolves, countries like recently Spain can get on the high risk list requiring quarantine on return.
By default 100% of MPA & MPE expected to be at CERN, except for annual leave or special cases like the current asbestos work.
Please send suggestions for BE seminars to Rogelio this week by Friday.
MAD-NG 0.9.0 beta3 has been released, links are on the slides.
Testers were defined as presented in the last meeting, further testers and feedback are welcome.
Question Tobias : how is COVID quarantine handled ? OK to do teleworking or need to take holidays ?
Rogelio : will see case by case, in our section not expected to be critical. The recommendation is not to travel to high risk countries.
First FCC-ee tracking with tapering and radiation in MAD-X, Leon Van Riesen-Haupt, slides
The energy changes around the ring by energy loss in synchrotron radiation.
Tapering is done to adapt the magnet strength to the local energy changes; how this is done has previously been presented.
Tapering is important for the FCC. Tracking also requires a thin lattice, generated with MAKETHIN.
Slicing with tapering was recently implemented by Helmut.
Leon showed first MAD-X tracking test results with energy loss, RF and quantum excitation, done for an ideal FCC lattice without coupling. Within few hundred turns the oscillations damp to the equilibrium horizontal and longitudinal emittance about as expected.
Measured beta functions from the tracking are as expected.
Next steps planned: study dynamic aperture studies, include alignment errors, beam-beam, solenoid, IP aberrations. Further develop and test tapering and EMIT module.
Helmut suggests a comparison with SAD (already planned) and to check damping partition (non-zero DELTAP).
Tobias expects that tracking with non-zero DELTAP in MAD-X will require further developments.
Questions on timing: Not much studied for FCC so far. A rough estimate by Leon is 2000 turns for one particle require about 30 min on HTCondor. Rogelio and Tobias say this would be much more than the typically 2-3 min needed for the LHC. Tobias plans to look into this with profiling.
Rogelio asks to review what is still missing in MAD-X compared to SAD.
Round table discussion.
Experiments: as already reported in the last meeting, Helmut said that preparations are ongoing for the next LHCC scheduled for the 1st week of September. He was also asked to participate in some preparatory meetings to assure sufficient experiments-machine communication for any new or extended experiments requests.
Injectors: Rogelio says work is in progress to specify improved equipment to excite beams for optics measurements.
Codes, Tobias: MAD-X new release very soon, probably tomorrow.
SIXTRACK, Alessio: Work done on finalizing scattering as relevant for crystals, changes for e-lens and on links to GEANT4 with relevance for crystal collimation.
Rogelio and Alessio : PySixDesk, presented in an earlier meeting https://indico.cern.ch/event/849999/ by Xiaohan Lu is followed up and planning will soon be discussed in a round table meeting. Please tell if you interested to join.
BOINC : our IT contact Niels says it is currently under-used. Ewen mentioned that some of his jobs were held back. Alessio will look into the issue.
OMC, Tobias: Jacqueline presented a nice experimental study for SuperKEKB, with also some puzzling observations that will require more follow up. Leon observes differences on DA between MAD-X and SAD when going beyond 4D. Renjun helps on MAD-X to SAD conversion to test the impact of the CMS solenoid fringe field in LHC amplitude detuning.
Next meeting planned in two weeks.
