Dispersion relations are statements of causality. They give sum rules connecting infrared and ultraviolet physics. While they originate in optics and quantum field theory, I will argue that their true purpose is gravity, due to the maximal growth rate of this force with energy. I will briefly discuss ongoing work on the space of consistent low-energy effective theories, with preliminary results in scalar models showing that causality turns dimensional analysis estimates into sharp numerical bounds.
