Selection of Materials for application to particle accelerators (2/2)

In this second lecture non–ferrous materials will be treated, that are also extensively used in particle accelerators and experiments. For each family the properties that make them attractive for high energy physics applications will be illustrated. Four families of materials will be covered, namely wrought aluminium and copper and their alloys, titanium grades including alloys suitable for structural use down to cryogenic temperature, and finally niobium and niobium alloys for Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) applications.


Short bio Ignacio Aviles Santilliana

Ignacio Aviles graduated in Industrial Engineering from the University Carlos III de Madrid in 2011. He specialized in Material Science, and did his master thesis at CERN in electron beam welding of ultra-high purity Nb and Ti. He continued linked to the superconducting radio frequency community with a CERN fellowship for material studies for HIE – ISOLDE cavities and superconducting proton Linac. In 2019 he completed his PhD in the framework of the ITER – CERN collaboration agreement, with special focus on fracture toughness at cryogenic temperature of austenitic stainless steel welds. He is staff in the Materials and Metrology section (EN-MME-MM) at CERN and in charge of the pole of mechanical testing activity of the section.
