Meeting minutes on INFN HFM WP3.2 Falcon D and record of decision:

      • Visit of LASA magnet laboratory including 3 vertical test cryostat, 7 m long maximum, power supply being upgraded to 30 kA. New refrigerator form Linder under order. Small laboratory to test strand and characterise cable. New building for the LASA magnet fabrication laboratory is under work at excavation stage, to be ready from end 2025.
      • Review of Falcon D WP3.1 organigram relate dot Agreement KE4102 with main member identified. The evolution in time since 2018 of the budget for the workpackage was presented. Total budget is 6.1 Me including 3.1 Me CERN contribution The comment related to the retiring ASG principal engineers resources was made. The name of project engineer at ASG will be further discussed with INFN.
      • 2 coils were added in the scope of the project ( 300 ke value), using the 20% contingency of the current running contract INFN with ASG. The total amount of coil to be built is presently 1 spare and 7 SC coils
      • Discussion on ASG last winging test and status of tooling production
        • ASG used both Dummy copper cable and non intentionally 50 m SC insulated cable to wind inner layer.
        • The tension used at 30 kg is above the optimum of 20 kg identified by INFN LASA in 2022
        • The deformation of plastic 3D printed spacers shown cumulated turn placement errors, leading to impossibility to fit the 3td spacer.
        • The use of the clamping cap device designed by ASG was useful ot hold in place block conductors.
        • Fantini has complete winding mandrel already delivered, curing tooling and start HT and impregnation moulds design.

      • Project milestones :
        • It was pointed out that next due milestone is the Design review of Falcon D from summer 2025, which can be split between coils and structure. It should be decided which experts are invited for the review.
        • The table of due payment dates is presented. The project could generate similar table for internal use with expected achieved milestones dates.
        • MS shown the updated schedule of the WP3.1 activities
        • Cold test at 4K is performed before final acceptance test  at 1.9K at CERN

      • Winding trial at ASG and at CERN
        • First turn on pole show some pop out at exit under high tension of 30 kg
        • Further block winding on Inner Layer shown cumulative deviations after 3td spacer ILE3 which prevent to fit last spacer.
        • The winding layer performed at ASG confirms the protrusion gap 4 mm to mandrel as observed at CERN
        • AF shown latest winding test at CERN to check the worst case block 01 ( Phi : 0 to 180 deg) using Falcon D cable :
          • Use of falcon D cable and roxie optimised head does not allow to lay down cable with short end, low ellipticity ( f:3) as it involves large torsion energy and results in collapse of cable
          • Use of Falcon D cable in block 01 and extended head ( z from 160 to 270 mm) results in very large head, requires large applied radial load to keep conductor through hard way bending ( x 5 loads). This corrects part of protrusion gap but would results in a multiturn cumulated errors.. Straight section is accordingly reduced.
          • Last test using a D56 mm mandrel show a good results of falcon D cable matching diameter , without large force, using a usual head length design of about 160 mm. The use of QXf 17 mm wide cable on a 50 mm diameter mandrel provided similar results.
      • As follow up actions:
        • INFN shall ask to ASG to perform some winding inner layer block layout with extended length to check multiturns effects. Parameters of blocks should be adapted.
        • AF at CERN will start optimisation of D56 mm coil cross section base don Falcon D cable, possibly with 6-blocks to gain in field optimiaiton
        • INFN will ask to hold the design of pending HT and impregnation moulds at ASG until we have the final decision on the Falcon D coil section design

      Falcon D structure design

      • Assembly procedure shall be completed in 2025 by LASA and structure manufacture design completed to order components

INFN Ge short mechanical mock up:

      • SF reported the status of advancement of mock up. All components have been procured, an assembly place identified . Assembly will start form January 25.
      • LR commented that if required the mock up could be updated ot latest design of coil preload system
      • AF commented that if required the mock up could be adapted to use some section of real 11T coil to reproduce a representative coil material
      • The definition of measurables by INFN during the test shall be discussed with CERN.

      New IA INFN CERN agreement:

      • The new INFN CERN agreement proposal including tasks 1 14T single aperture and 2 : double aperture 12T has been approved at last SC meeting at CERN.
      • Main components like insulated cable, raw iron and steel are part of procurement by CERN
      • The scope of the technical deliverables were discussed and ET mentioned that the scope and relevance of task 2 related to Double aperture construction and components is being discussed within MSC group. LR declares that it is important consider the lead time it takes to secure the budget line for such construction task and that the payment are anyhow related to deliverables.
