Beamline for Schools | Exploring ELSA and Particle Detectors in Bonn
The organisers of Beamline for Schools (BL4S; https://cern.ch/bl4s) are glad to meet the teams interested in participating in the competition.
So, you’ve heard of CERN and DESY? Cool. But did you know there’s a particle accelerator hiding in Bonn, Germany, that’s been stretching electrons and smashing them into targets for decades? Welcome to ELSA, "the Electron Stretcher Accelerator", where we make electrons go really, really fast… and then crash them into things. Why? To uncover the secrets of matter, of course!
In this talk, you’ll learn how electrons are accelerated at ELSA and what kinds of experiments take place here. Spoiler alert: Even though we accelerate leptons, our true focus lies with hadrons. We’ll also explore the beam properties and the wide range of experiments ELSA can support, from detector development to medical applications.
Join us on this high-energy journey to unravel the mysteries of particle physics with ELSA.
Warning: May result in unexpected science vibes and brain sparks. Side effects may include a spontaneous interest in particle physics.
To facilitate the participation of people coming from different time zones, we will hold the same session two times, at 9am and at 5pm, CET (Central European Time). Below is the ZOOM link for you to join the event:
