The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next generation facility for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy operating in the very high energy (20 GeV to 300 TeV) range. It will consist of two telescope arrays, one on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, and the other near Paranal, Chile. CTA will provide order of magnitude improvements in sensitivity over current instrunments, together with enhanced angular resolution, energy resolution and energy range. The CTA Consortium, consisting of over 1500 members from around the world, has proposed a core program of observations to address a selection of key science goals for the observatory. I will summarize these goals, and highlight links with the Fermi mission.
