Workshop Abstract

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) are state-of-the-art for low light level detection, their single photon sensitivity and photon number resolving power being unique. In addition, they are solid state detectors, with all the related advantages. So far, SiPM manufacturers have focused primarily on the sensors, with continuous and impressive improvements, however research teams are developing auxiliary devices and ancillary systems which are essential for the SiPM integration in application specific instruments (e.g. front-end electronics, ASIC's, solutions for the integration of a large number of sensors into systems, DAQ etc). Having access to these technologies should speed up appreciably the learning curve by potential end-users. The Particle Physics community is particularly active, and after identifying a significant set of technology offerings (or: concepts) intends to promote these during the event, with the objective of fostering industry-academia collaborative projects. The event will take place at CERN in the exhibition Globe, over two days (the afternoon of the 16th and the morning of the 17th). Summary talks on the major developments are planned, together with presentations of the company profiles. Researchers are encouraged to have live demos of their technologies. The following topics are covered:
  • 16th afternoon

summary talks to review main requirements and major technology developments in state-of-the-art SiPM’s, readout ASIC development, imaging in medicine and life science, industry view on imaging, SiPM in High Energy Physics, SiPM in Astroparticle Physics, field reports on successful technology transfer.

  • 17th morning

company profiles and panel discussion towards a roadmap for collaborative R&D
