Introduction

The FLUKA.CERN Collaboration is happy to announce their 2023 Advanced course, that will take place from June 5 to June 9 at Argonne National Laboratory.

ANL is a US Department of Energy lab situated about 20 miles southwest of Chicago city and 20 miles south of O'Hare Intl. Airport.

This advanced course is intended for students and professionals who already use FLUKA and want to deepen their knowledge on specific advanced features of the code.

Among the topics that will be discussed are:

  • The FLUKA environment and the source routine
  • Advanced geometry (geometry replication)
  • Electric and magnetic fields
  • Advanced settings and scoring
  • Programming user routines
  • Neutron scoring
  • Advanced biasing
  • Activation
  • Optical photons

In addition, a user workshop will be organised, where participants will have the opportunity to present their work, and serving as basis for collective discussion (see below for more details).

Training Fee

The registration fee amounts to 1000 CHF. An additional 1000 CHF are required for commercial users (2000 CHF total). The fee covers lunch and coffee breaks during the course, as well as the social dinner.

Registration procedure

In order to provide an optimal level of interactivity and support, participation is limited to 20 participants. In case this limit should be exceeded, a waiting list will be set up.

Registration can be started by filling in and submitting the registration form. After approval, you will receive additional information concerning the payment.

Registrations will only be considered complete after proof of payment is received.

Please make arrangements for payment as soon as you receive the explicit registration approval message. You will have two weeks starting from registration approval to complete the payment. After that, your spot might not be guaranteed as people from the waiting list will be allowed to proceed with their payment. In case you anticipate payment delays, please contact the organizers as soon as possible.

The following payment options are available:

  • CERN participants: ask your group secretary to get in touch with the SY-STI administrative officer to set up the transfer
  • Credit card payment: Keep in mind that credit card companies charge a processing fee of about 2.5% (Visa and MC) or about 3.7% (Amex). N.B.: If you need an invoice for reimbursement by your home institution, the credit card option should be avoided in favour of the bank transfer below
  • Bank transfer: If you want to pay by bank transfer, please contact us by email. We will provide you with the payment details and the pro-forma invoice. N.B.: Multiple participants from the same institute can be treated at once.

Access to Argonne National Lab

Participants from outside the US will first have to obtain a visa (B1) unless they are eligible for the visa waiver program, after which they will have to register for ANL access. If you have been approved as a participant, we will send you the necessary information to register for access. You will need travel documents (passport, visa, work authorization etc.) and a CV to complete this step.  Depending on the country of citizenship, approval may take several weeks.

Please indicate in the registration form if you need a visa to enter the US. Our recommendation is to start the visa process as soon as your registration has been approved, in parallel with the payment.

Accommodation

Accommodation is NOT included in the course fee. Participants can choose to stay at the ANL guest house or in hotels nearby.

Prior Knowledge

As this is an advanced FLUKA course, prior knowledge of the software is required. We expect participants to know their way about Flair, including the Geoviewer module and the running and plotting interface. Participants should be familiar with fundamental concepts underlying FLUKA, such as combinatorial geometry, basic scoring capabilities and main interaction mechanisms present in the code.

Personal computers

Participants are expected to verify beforehand that the latest versions of FLUKA and Flair have been installed on their laptops and are up and running so that they can participate in the hands-on exercise sessions. Further instructions will follow.

User Workshop

FLUKA advanced courses feature a User Workshop in addition to the various lectures and exercises. During this workshop, which is interspersed among the regular programme, participants present their FLUKA use-cases relevant to the topics of the course, describing the problems they faced and how they have solved them.

Participation to the User Workshop is not mandatory, and any user can elect to submit a contribution (subject to approval by the course organisers). We will try to accommodate as many presentations as possible, however we are mindful of the dense course programme and will prioritize covering the whole programme.

Should you choose to participate to the User Workshop, confirmation of your inclusion will be given to you as part of the registration process. You will then be asked to prepare a short presentation (15-20 mins) about your project, with roughly 10 minutes allowed for questions and discussion with the class. We would like to stress the fact that the User Workshop is NOT intended as a collective debugging session for users needing support on a specific project. Contributions should reflect a project that is finalised or about to be.

Important:

  • It is your responsibility when travelling or transiting on your journey to ensure that you have valid passports, visas and re-entry permits which meet the official requirements of countries you visit. We recommend that your passport has at least 6 months validity from the last stopover point.
  • Any cancellation of the course due to unforeseen circumstances will lead to the reimbursement of the fee. CERN and Argonne National Lab are not liable for any reimbursement of the student's travel arrangements in that case.
