      Accelerator Magnet R&D in CHART 1h 30m

CHART, the Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology initiative (http://chart.ch) has initiated a number of research activities for accelerator magnet technology. In this presentation, we cover all magnet-related activities (excluding conductor R&D).

CHART MagDev at PSI started in 2016 with a study of Canted-Cosine Theta technology and its applicability to the FCC-hh main dipole. As part of this early phase, a demonstrator magnet, the Canted Dipole 1 (CD1) was designed and constructed at PSI with support and technology transfer from LBNL. The magnet was recently tested at CERN.

MagDev1 (2020-2022) and the impending MagDev2 (2023-2024) research periods have seen the expansion of the MagDev laboratory at PSI and a focus on stress management technology for high-field accelerator magnets. Moreover, MagDev1 has started an ambitious HTS program at PSI that performs research on HTS technology for HFMs and delivers demonstrator magnets for FCCee.

In addition to MagDev at PSI, several projects are hosted at ETHZ, such as MagRes and MagComp (resin R&D and coil-composite characterization and constitutive modeling at ETHZ-MATV-SMG), MagAM (additive manufacturing, ETHZ-pd|z), MagNum (Model-Based Systems Engineering in Numerics for Magnets, ETHZ-EE-IEF) and CPES (cryogenic power supplies, ETHZ-EE-PES).

In this presentation, we shall provide an overview of activities, results, and future plans, and how they integrate with the R&D Roadmap of the HFM Programme.
