How to get to Hamburg and DESY
By plane:
The nearest airport is Hamburg Airport "Helmut Schmidt". There you will find many options to reach the city or DESY:
- Taxi (about 40 minutes to DESY)
- Public transport: the most popular way is with line S1 of the metro (S-Bahn). It departs every 10 min and can take you to the central station in 25 min. There are also buses that depart from the airport.
- Car Rental & Car Sharing available
By train:
With Deutsche Bahn you can reach the following main stations:
- Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
- Altona Station
By car:
- Main entrance: Notkestraße 85
- Side entrance: Luruper Chaussee 149
By public transport:
- Main entrance: bus stop "Zum Hünengrab (DESY)", line 1.
- Side entrance: bus stop "Luruper Chaussee (DESY)", lines 2, 3, X3 and 284.
City Bike (StadtRAD):
From the following central S-Bahn stations:
- Altona: 6 km to DESY main entrance Notkestraße 85
- Stellingen: 3.5 km to the DESY side entrance Luruper Chaussee 149
- Othmarschen: 2 km to the DESY main entrance Notkestraße 85

How to move around
Hamburg has a number of transport options, both public and private, that will let you navigate the city with ease.
- Public transport: HVV network connects the city by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus and ferry. The tickets work for every means of transport. You can buy them in vending machines at stations and bus stops, on the bus (only cash), or with the hvv App for iOS and Android (this way you get a 7% discount on single and day tickets). With the app you can also call up the departure times of all lines and find connections with the route planner. Navigating with Google Maps also works fairly well.
- StadtRAD City Bikes: download the app, sign up, select your tariff and then you're able to use bikes from stations all around the city.
- Taxi, MOIA (e-mobility), car sharing, electric scooters, ...
