Description

The China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) is a space mission developed by the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) together with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), to investigate the near-Earth electromagnetic, plasma, and particle environment. The first satellite, CSES-01, was launched in February 2018. One of the main payloads on board the CSES-01 satellite is the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01), a light and compact detector, composed of plastic scintillators and LYSO inorganic crystals, designed and built by the Italian Limadou collaboration. This instrument measures electrons from 3 to 100 MeV, protons from 30 to 250 MeV, and light nuclei up to a few hundred MeV/n. A detector with improved particle detection capabilities and energy range reach, HEPD-02, will be launched aboard the CSES-02 satellite in 2025, allowing for improved studies of particle fluxes in the near-Earth environment. The HEPD-01 has shown impressive ability in measuring various particle populations all over its orbit, like galactic cosmic rays or sub-cutoff electrons and protons. This latter class includes both stably trapped particles in the Radiation Belts and particles bounced back from the top of the atmosphere without being able to escape the magnetic trap (re-entrant albedo).
In this work, we report precision measurements of the re-entrant protons in the >30 MeV energy region and re-entrant electrons in the >5 MeV energy range, performed by HEPD-01 between 2018 and 2022.
