If you are not already in Germany, there are two airports close to Gӧttingen, Hannover, and Frankfurt. The Frankfurt Airport is situated in the city of Frankfurt am Main. Most international as well as domestic flights come here.
Getting to Gӧttingen from Frankfurt Airport by train:
When you land at the airport, the first part of your journey towards Gӧttingen is going from the airport to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, the central train station in Frankfurt am Main where you can catch long-distance trains. However, the distance from the airport to this central train station is about 9 km. Therefore, one will first have to take a train from the Regional Bahnhof from which local S-Bahn trains travel towards Frankfurt City or the Flughafen Fernbahnhof both of which are only 10 mins by foot from the airport’s Terminal 1. If your flight arrives at Terminal 2 you can always take the free shuttle bus which stops at the bus stop in front of Terminal 1 from where you can reach these train stations. These are only a small distance from each other with platforms 1 to 3 belonging to the Regional Bahnhof while platforms 4 to 7 belong to the Fernbahnhof. It must be noted that the journey from the airport to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof takes a little under 30 mins. There are, however, also some trains that go directly from the Fernbahnhof to Gӧttingen as the Fernbahnhof is the long-distance line.
Train tickets can be purchased from the site: bahn.de. There is also an app called DB Navigator. The total journey by train takes more than 2 and a half hours by the Intercity Express or ICE from Frankfurt airport to Gӧttingen Bahnhof.
The second airport is in Hannover and it is closer to Gӧttingen, however, is a small airport and only EU flights arrive here. The airport is connected to the city of Hannover main station (Hannover Hbf) through a train (S-Bahn number 5). From Hannover Hbf to Gӧttingen is a 20 minutes train ride with ICE or an hour and twenty minutes ride with a regional train.
