Committee name changes - from Globe Public Events Committee to Public Events Committee.
Public events committee - new structure and mandate
3 pillars for events at SGW and the Globe
Claudia Marcelloni (with Lila Mabiala), will be the person in charge for the programming of events for the public taking place at Science Gateway and the Globe. The events and operations at the SGW Business Unit will still be in charge of the operations of the events for the public as well as responsible for the other two pillars: Private and CERNois events.
5 pillars for public events programming
Regarding the new mandate for the committee, FB notes that the Committee should continue bringing their own spontaneous proposals. FB notes that local events themselves also include recurring, spontaneous and thematic events - better mapping of local events is needed.
Recurrent events
TS notes it would be good to map all recurring events (on and off site) so as to be able to make relevant choices depending on available time, resources, space, themes etc. FB suggests Science shows, children’s workshops are also included in the mapping. They don’t necessarily require curation/content programming (TSP is in control) but they do fall under public events and would be good to be overseen by the Public Events Committee nevertheless. JG asks whether we will publish a full cultural programme? In that case all events should be included! (including workshops). Action → Map the full list of events planned last year (for mapping purposes) and for this year.
Types of possible activities under a thematic programme
LC asks whether the committee will continue curating for the Globe as well as SGW? It will be an objective for the committee to decide which events are targeted at which audiences and the space required, keeping in mind that resources remain limited.
Timeline
2023 - Focus - Inauguration of Science Gateway, and Quantum as a theme for Sparks!
2024 - Focus - CERN 70 anniversary
2025 - TBD
Public events committee - proposals
Schedule for 2023
Add the Scientific Conference to mark the anniversary of neutrino current, W and Z bosons - one week after the inauguration of SGW with one public talk by Fabiola Gianotti (TBC) - Action → Add public talk to the list of events once approved
Hugo Duminil-Copin (FR) – 2022 Fields Medalist: CM mentioned that he has been asked to speak quite few times by local organizations and if we want to invite him, it is unclear if now or later would be best. Action → Approach Hugo and ask where locally he has been speaking and when would he be available?
Jean-Marc Jancovici (via GFC) : Action → Frédérick to follow-up for SGW next year.
John Grace distinguished lecture: David Townsend could be invited (independently of John Grace) and Avi Loeb could do both. JG recommends looking into: “Dancing Naked in the Vinefield”. Action → Let John Grace know that the Public Event Committee has approved Avi Loeb to speak , then Claudia will reach out to find out whether he’d also be interested in giving a Colloquium. Claudia will also discuss with David Townsend a date for a talk next year perhaps linked to KT.
Cineglobe
Proposal ok, Data protection needs to be consulted on format and data used in show.
Talk by Michel Mayor and discussion with Catherine Deglioni
Would be best to have a talk by Michel Mayor with Didier Queiloz, who is a strong speaker at a later date. AG notes that Dark Matter Day does not have to be an event, it is not a priority, given the SGW opening. Action: Follow-up with Paola Catapano on her plans to host Michel Mayor, proposing to host a talk along with Didier Queiloz at a later date.
Talk (book) "Entre deux infinis" by Gianfranco Bertone
LM notes that it is very similar to the before-last talk at the Globe (male, French, book), how do we approach diversity? FB suggested that maybe we should ask him to give the talk in English instead. AG mentioned that we need to also ensure it is not a book promotion. JG mentions that in terms of diversity we could also consider other options for talks: Ursula Bassler, Irine Jakob or Alexandre Astier. Action → Accept Gianfranco's suggestion for the talk but ask if he would consider giving it in EN.
Talk - Visibilité des montagnes lointaies by Philippe Lebrun
Not quite a public talk, but to be suggested to Andrea for Local events. Action → Find out what opportunities there might be to host his talk at a local venue and then reply to Philippe.
Master Nobel et Rebelle” Englert documentary
JG suggests that we could stream it along with other documentaries about CERN such as Big Bang Machine from NOVA during a whole week/period next year for the 70 year celebrations. Action → Keep this suggestion in the list for next year.
Dance avec l'evolution Hallet Eghayan and Pascal Picq
LC asks what is the physics nexus? TS notes it’s important not to set precedent of events too far from physics/science, we should keep a list of why we accept some events and refuse others. - In this case we clarify that we are considering this event because of the link to Musée d’histoire naturelle. Action → Find out with Emma Sanders what are the plans for hosting the Musée d’histoire naturelle to see if there is a link for this performance to be considered.
Magic and Science Academy (Cambridge)
Anja has been in touch with them and would be interested in bringing this, along with TSP, etc. Action → Investigate cost and potential integration to next year's programming
Sahar Dehghan - WHIRL Quantum Dance
JG notes there’s a link with the Wright Foundation and it would be good to work on this relationship. Action → Investigate cost and potential integration to this/next year's programming
Theatre Quantum Lovers
Action → Committee approves JG going to talk to GAOS informally.
Theatre Binome
Nice idea but expensive.
Theatre Farm Hall
JG notes that it may be necessary to start charging for certain content. FB says it is a question of experience, accounting, legal to set up ticketing. LM brings up the fact that SGW is not a theatre. And charging for tickets is against the outreach efforts. Action → JG to follow up discussion with Patrick Geerhard.
