Description
Aside from specialized skills, physicists also have quantitative skills useful in a wide variety of contexts. Among these are the abilities to quantify uncertainty and make useful approximations. These skills, if practiced by members of the general public, can help in understanding scientific results, in understanding the progress of science, in evaluating claims from non-scientific sources, and in taking into account the limitations of approximate models. In this talk, I discuss some efforts to make these skills intelligible to a more mainstream audience.
