During the excursion, we will visit the medieval town of Kežmarok, located in the Spiš region of eastern Slovakia. The town's name originates from the German Kesmark ("Käsemarkt" - "cheese market"), as it historically held rights to organize a cheese market. Since 1950, the historic core of Kežmarok has been part of Slovakia’s cultural heritage reserve.
Kežmarok is dominated by a 14th-century Gothic castle featuring a Baroque chapel. In the old town, visitors can explore numerous Renaissance merchant houses and charming squares.
We will visit the new Evangelical Church, built in an eclectic style, as well as the unique Articular Church, constructed entirely of wood in 1688. The Articular Church houses an organ with 1719 wooden pipes and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
Our final stop will be the building of the Evangelical Lyceum, whose history dates back to the 14th century. Today, it hosts a historic library, one of the largest school libraries in Europe, containing 150,000 volumes, including 53 incunabula (first prints).
