Program

Summer@CERN is a summer program over two weeks and takes place at CERN outside Geneva in Switzerland. The program is open to all students and young researchers involved in CERN activities. This can be (technical, summer, doctoral) students at CERN, bachelor, master and PhD students in Norway, postdoctors and young researchers. During your stay at CERN, you will get to know other young researchers in the Norwegian CERN community while also getting familiar with the research at CERN through lectures, hands-on training, visits and excursions. There will also be a social program taking place in the afternoons. Here you can expect to get a taste of what Geneva has to offer in terms of food, attractions and activities. Remember to bring your swimwear!

The two weeks will cover a large range of different fields and topics, from entrepreneurship and innovation to technology and physics.

Week 1
The first week will take place at CERN's IdeaSquare. R&D, knowledge transfer and innovation is the name of the game here, and spread across the halls of IdeaSquare you can find workshops filled with everything you might need to start prototyping! During this week you can expect to be tasked with choosing an emergent technology developing at CERN and applying it to real-world problems, together with people from many different disciplines.

Week 2
The second week is all about physics! CERN is the mecca of particle and nuclear physics, and there is a lot of groundbreaking research taking place here. You can expect to learn about (and visit!) several of the interesting experiments and what they are trying to uncover. If you find dark matter, antimatter, quark-gluon plasma, undiscovered nuclear isotopes, astrophysical phenomena (or all the above) interesting, make sure not to miss this week.

NB!
You can register for both or one of the weeks. Note that you are expected to take part in the full program of the week(s) you sign up for, including the social events. Bachelor and master students are particularly encouraged to sign up for both weeks.

NB2!
A more detailed program is not yet available, but will be published on this page as soon as it is ready. It will probably look quite similar to the program of the 2022 version of the event.

Time and place

Location: CERN, Geneva, Switzerland
Time: June 24 - July 5, 2024

Registration

Registration is open until Tuesday April 2. Please fill in the registration form as soon as possible, and if something does not make sense, please reach out, and we will help you!

Funding

For students and researchers in the Norwegian center for CERN-related research (NorCC) or at CERN, Summer@CERN is fully financed. For students and researchers outside of NorCC and CERN, it is possible to apply for funds to cover travel and accommodation. More on the latter in the registration form.

Travel

The easiest way to travel to Geneva is by plane. For bachelor and master students, we offer to book the travel. PhD students and researchers in NorCC (i.e. people on a contract) should book their own travels, and will be reimbursed by using the standard travel expense form in DFØ.

Accommodation

We have reserved a number of hotel rooms for people traveling from Norway. Bachelor and master students will be expected to share a room. PhD students and resarchers in NorCC can choose to stay in the common accommodation or book something else themselves.
