SKIRT Days 2024

Europe/Brussels
Gent

Gent

WATT The Firms Nieuwewandeling 62 9000 Ghent Belgium
Description

Welcome to the SKIRT Days 2024 (24 – 26 April 2024)

The UGent SKIRT team happily invites past, current and future SKIRT users, developers and collaborators to attend the SKIRT Days 2024, from Wednesday 24 April to Friday 26 April in Ghent.

The SKIRT Days are a regularly returning event (see e.g. SKIRT Days 2022) that aims at presenting the latest technical developments, showcasing recent scientific results, and discussing ongoing and/or planned research in the broad SKIRT community. In addition, there will be a collaborative workspace for one-on-one discussions in an informal setting.

Updates

Thank you for registering for the SKIRT Days 2024, we look forward to meeting you in Ghent! We'd like to share the following information about the meeting:

  • The conference schedule is flexible, meaning that within one block (morning or afternoon) there are no fixed time slots for the presentations. Hence, there is some flexibility regarding the duration of the presentations. As a guideline, aim for a presentation of 15 minutes plus 5 minutes of questions. If your talk is a bit shorter or longer than this timeslot that would be totally fine too.
  • On Wednesday, the venue will be open from 9am onwards for the registration, the conference then starts at 10am.
  • Social activity I: On Wednesday evening, we will go bowling at 8pm. The bowling itself is going to be free for all participants, so join us at O'Learys for a fun evening!
  • Social activity II: On Friday afternoon/evening, we planned an excursion/conference dinner in Brakel, which is going to be free for all participants. The transport from Ghent to Brakel is organized via shuttle buses, leaving Ghent at 3pm and arriving back in Ghent around 10pm. You're welcome to bring your walking boots and swimming gear. We'll share more detailed information about the social activities at the meeting.
  • We created a WhatsApp group which we can use to coordinate any dinner or bar plans, or in case you have any logistical questions. Join by clicking the link you received in the e-mail!

Program

A non-exhaustive list of topics to be discussed:

  • Dust radiative transfer
  • X-ray radiative transfer
  • LTE and non-LTE line radiative transfer on atoms and molecules
  • Post-processing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations
  • AGN nuclei and circumnuclear media
  • Resonant line radiative transfer, including Lyman-alpha
  • Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques
  • Radiative transfer benchmarks
  • Radiative transfer and machine learning
  • Comparing synthetic to actual observations

The SKIRT Days will start at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday and end at 13:00 on Friday. A detailed timetable will be published later.

Venue

The 2024 edition of the SKIRT Days takes place in convention center WATT The Firms, Nieuwewandeling 62. The workshop will be in-person only owing to its interactive nature.

Registration

To register, please send an email to skirtdays2024@gmail.com. All attendees are invited to present their SKIRT related work at the meeting (we also welcome work-in-progress presentations). Therefore, please include the title of your presentation to the registration email. Note that the number of participants will be limited.

Registration deadline: 15 March 2024.

The registration fee is 150 euros. This includes all coffee breaks and two lunches. Please finalise your registration by proceeding to the payment page.

Getting there

Ghent is easily reached by public transport from most major cities in Western Europe (there are at least two direct trains to/from Brussels each hour). The nearest airport is Brussels Airport Zaventem.

Ghent has a reliable public transport network with a large number of buses. It is possible to buy the tickets online, at the ticket machines at the station, or inside the vehicle with a bank card (cash not possible).

The easiest way to reach WATT The Firms from Gent Sint Pieters station (the main train station of Ghent) is with the P4 bus (Perron 6). The bus comes every 10 minutes during the day. If you are arriving from Ghent town centre, you can take the bus 10, 11, or 12a (Perron 3) at the Korenmarkt, these buses arrive every few minutes. In both cases, you exit on Gent Brugsepoort (Brugsepoortstaat), and can then reach the conference building by foot in less than 5 minutes.

Lodging

Ghent is a popular tourist destination, with many hotels and AirBnBs.
