Introduction

The FLUKA.CERN Collaboration is happy to announce its first ever topical course on FLUKA applications in the field of radiation protection.

This course is intended for advanced users of the code working on all aspects linked with shielding design, dose calculation and residual activity calculation.

This course will take place at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) from 25 to 27 November 2024.

Training fee

The registration fee amounts to 300 CHF. An additional fee of 600 CHF is requested for commercial users (900 CHF total).

This fee includes lunches at CERN Restaurant 2 and coffee breaks throughout the course.

Registration procedure

The attendence of this topical course will be limited to 18 participants. We will assess each registration to make sure that all spots are filled by members of the FLUKA community that benefit the most from this opportunity. Having prior experience with a FLUKA course, proven experience with the code and manifest activity in the radiation protection field will be prioritizing traits.

Registrations should reach us no later than 31 August, and will be confirmed by us before September 10.

After explicit approval, you will receive information about the payment.

Registrations will only be considered complete after proof of payment is received.

Please make arrangements for payment as soon as you receive the explicit registration approval message and no later than two weeks after approval, otherwise we will give your spot to a participant in the waiting list.. In case you anticipate a delay in the payment, please contact the organisers as soon as possible.

The following payment options will be available:

  • CERN participants: ask your group secretary to get in touch with the SY-STI administrative officer to set up the transfer.
  • Credit card payment : You can proceed directly on Indico. Keep in mind that credit card companies charge a processing fee of about 2.5% (Visa and Mastercard) or about 3.7% (American Express). NB: if you need an invoice for reimbursement by your home institution, the CC option should be avoided in favor of the bank transfer below.
  • Bank transfer : If you want to pay with a bank transfer, contact us. We will provide you with the payment details and the invoice.
    • NB: Multiple participants from the same institute can be treated together for that purpose

Accomodation

Participants to the course will have the option to stay at the CERN hostel for the duration of the event. This option is accessible through the registration form.

Topics taught at the course and Prior Knowledge

In order to guarantee a smooth course, and as the schedule of this topical event is very tight, we insist on all participants being seasoned FLUKA users, ideally having already taken part in a FLUKA course, and working actively in matters of radiation protection. We kindly advise new and newer users of the code to attend one of our beginner courses instead.

The topics taught at the course will be the following:

- Fluka basics for RP
- Radiation protection primer
- Prompt radiation exposure and shielding design
- Activation calculations
- Residual radiation exposure
- Radioactive sources
- Flair tools relevant to RP studies

Computers

Participants are expected to verify beforehand that the latest versions of both FLUKA and Flair have been installed on their machines and are up and running so that they can participate in the hands-on and exercise sessions. A couple of weeks prior to the course, we will provide you with a script testing both software and all dependencies to help you make sure that your system is ready.
