Travel to Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University (SBU) is situated on the north shore of Long Island (LI) in southeastern New York (NY). We are approximately 60 miles east of New York City (NYC).
Traveling to the Conference by Plane
Stony Brook is conveniently accessible from several major airports. Here's a breakdown of your options:
JFK International Airport (Recommended)
- Distance: 49 miles
- Why we recommend it: JFK offers a direct rail connection to Stony Brook via the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), making it the most convenient option for those without a car.
- Getting to Stony Brook:
- Take the AirTrain from your terminal to Jamaica Station.
- Transfer to the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch. You may need to transfer again at Jamaica, Huntington, or Hicksville.

- Other options from JFK: Car rentals are available at the airport, accessible via the AirTrain.
LaGuardia Airport
- Distance: 52 miles
- Getting to Stony Brook:
- Take the Q70 bus to Woodside Ave/61 St. (2-minute walk to Woodside Train Station). Further information can be found here.
- Take the Woodside train to Jamaica Station.
- Transfer to the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch.

- Other options from LaGuardia: Taxis and ride-sharing services are available to Jamaica Station.
Islip-MacArthur Airport
- Distance: 16 miles
- Getting to Stony Brook: This airport is the closest to Stony Brook. However, there is no direct train connection. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available.
Newark Liberty International Airport (Least Recommended)
- Distance: 82 miles
- Why it's less convenient: Reaching Stony Brook from Newark requires multiple train transfers and a longer travel time.
- Getting to Stony Brook:
- Take the AirTrain Newark to Newark Airport Railroad Station.
- Take the train to New York Penn Station.
- Transfer to the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch.
Important Notes about the LIRR:
- Not all LIRR trains depart from Penn Station; some depart from Grand Central Terminal.
- The LIRR station at Stony Brook is at the north end of campus; free bus service to the central campus is provided.
