Protons received

East Area Beam Status (N. Charitonidis)

On call phone number: 67500

T09/10/11: Good operation.

East Area Users Tour de Table

T8 Main: IRRAD/CHARM (F. Ravotti / S. Fiore)

Good week. Also this week POT above the reference intensity for T8 (~2.4e16 p/w, see plot below). The TID generated by the CHARM target was around 250 Gy at the position R10 for the needs of the main user of the week.
The centering of the T8 beam, both on the horizontal and vertical plane was, as the back to the usual values >91-92%.

In the slot 00:00 - 08:00 on Wednesday, before the weekly access ion MD (IEAST cycle, see Ruben’s report) in preparation of the CHIMERA/HEARTS user run from 13.11.

Yesterday in IRRAD we removed EP-ESE (HGCAL) samples, installed ATLAS ITk strip setup on multiple tables (RT and cold box) plus another batch of scintillating materials for LHCb, while all other long-term experiments continue.

In CHARM we removed the SY-BI setup, installed setups by SY-EPC while the components testing (BE-CEM) continue.

Before stopping the protons (Tuesday afternoon ?) we are planning a XSEC calibration with the low intensity beam (~1E10 pps range) used for an IRRAD experiment last week and probably the “usual” ion MD (if ion beam available, if not - looking for another slot). Next access is on Wednesday.

T9 Outgoing Main: NANOCAL (M. Soldani)

The data taking was very smooth, we managed to complete our measurement programme fully, i.e., probing a full-size (27 X0) fine-sampling Pb-plastic shashlik calorimeter module with electrons (1-5 GeV) and MIPs in two different photodetector configurations – SiPMs and PMTs.

Thanks to Dipanwita and Maarten for their always excellent support!

T9 Main: STRAW TRACKER (Temur Enik, Katerina Kuznetsova)

  • Wednesday moved from SPS H4 to PS T09 - a lot of support from DRD1, infrastructure teams of 887 and 157, gas group, safety and Andre Rummler and Maarten Van Dijk - were installed and alligned by the night
  • Beam configuration - low momenta (<=2 GeV) hadrons for charge measurements (PID program) and ~15 GeV hadrons for time measurements. In contact with Dipanwita in order to understand the best configuration for our measurements

T9 Incoming No beam: WCTE (Week 41) (Mark Hartz)

  • The WCTE detector assembly work is nearly complete and preparations are being made for installation in T9 starting next week.
  • While the Week 41 is marked as no beam, we may request a small amount of beam for commissioning before the end of week 41 if the installation is complete and all inspections are passed. We aim to have the equipment inspection on Monday, October 14.

T10 Main: ALICE RICH (M. Nicola Mazziotta)

Smooth operation. Data taking on going 24h/24h expect some short periods. We have appreciated more spills.

T10 Parallel: RE7 GAMMA MEV (M. Nicola Mazziotta)

Smooth operation. Data taking on going 24h/24h expect some short periods. We have appreciated more spills.

This is a picture of the ALICE-RICH on the Desy table and GAMMAMEV (downstream table) set-up.

T10 Incoming Main: ALICE MUON ID (Week 41) (Yael Vasquez & Antonio Paz)

  • Oct 9-15. Muon and Hadrons beam [1.5,10] GeV 10k/spill, collimated
  • Goals:
    • Study MID prototypes response at different energies
    • Study shower resolution (time and position)
    • Test several readout configurations
  • Plan:
  • Oct 9. Setup installation (supports, equipment, detectors). Safety visit. Pedestal run.
  • Oct 10. Data taking w/o absorber.
  • Oct 11-15. Absorber installation. Data taking with three absorber configurations and with both Muon and Hadrons beams [1.5,10] GeV.

T11 Main: CLOUD (Eva Sommer)

CLOUD is taking data, all is well.

AWAKE (M. Bergamaschi)

Started Physics program of fifth AWAKE run on Monday 30/09/2024
Good operations

North Area Beam Status (N. Charitonidis)

On call phone number: 67500

Target sharing, also in ASM (accessible from within the CERN network)

T2 T4 T10 T6 Date Week
30 56 21 150 11.09. 37
30 56 21 30 04.10. 40
30 45 21 150 09.10. 41

H2: In general good operation. Issue with the first collimator 021049 that has a broken potentionmeter, is fully open for now but necessary to be exchanged before the ion run. Intervention tentantively planned for 01.11.
M2: Good operation. Potentiometer for Scraper 752 exchanged on 2nd October and the scraper is working well now.
H4/H6/H8/P42/K12: Good operation.

Wobbling: H6/H8 polarity change will be done around 15:00 today.

North Area Users Tour de Table

P42-K12:

NA62 (M. Raggi)

Good and stable beam conditions except for the long PS fault. Good conditions in the 50 Hz component. Trying to keep intensity on T10 in the
interval (20±2)x10^11. NA62 shifters will call in case intensity it’s outside the interval.

M2:

Main: MUONE (Carlo Ferrari)

  • DAQ issues fixed
  • Serenity board with two FPGA worked fine
  • New firmware running with on-line tracking recognition for event selection
  • ECAL synchronization still missing

Incoming Main: AMBER (Week 41) (Josef Novy)

  • CEDAR installation from 4th to 9th
  • RP test for approval of high-intensity
  • Preparation of DAQ and detectors

H2:

Main: LHCB ECAL (L. Martinazzoli)

Smooth data taking. Excellent electron beam with very good momentum spread. Thanks to Bastien and Nikos for the help!

Some hiccups with the first collimator: one half got stuck, first out of the beamline, then on the beamline. Issue temporary solved through intervention (collimator moved fully open) and tuning the collimators downstream.

Studying several prototypes and configurations of calorimeters for LHCb with electrons 20-100 GeV/c and measuring the response to pions/mixed hadrons at 100 GeV/c.

Unfortunately, the DESY table we were assigned broke suddenly. The set-up is manageable with XSCA + NIKHEF tables, although having a DESY would have helped.

Incoming Main: FASER PRESHOWER (Week 41) (Please Put Your Name Here)

    • Thanks to GIF for the flexible arrangement of Pion and Magnet runs.
    • Three accesses per day worked well again.
  • De-Inatallation

    • As usual, huge thanks to the RP and Crane teams for their prompt help.
    • Some equipment was left in PPE134 (needed for the 2025 TB campaign). It can be removed at any time if needed.
    • We hope we did not interfere too much with the SND installation (the area was completely free only before lunch due to the large amount of equipment).
  • Thanks to everybody for the support

Outgoing Main: GIF++ (Please Put Your Name Here)

Main: SND (Gerardo Vasquez)

Beam: Thanks to Bastien and Nikos for setup up the beam files for us.

Setup: Managed to setup everything quite late yesterday, we expect safety visit today at 13.30 to start data taking. In the meantime debugging DAQ and trigger.

Beam counters on first block, ECAl on DESY table and one veto counter second blocks*.
*Long blocks are there for the setup of next week.

Plan: Continue with muon/hadronds and tomorrow afternoon start with electrons.

H6:

Outgoing Main: EP PIXEL (Younes Otarid)

Very successfull data taking, despite the long LHC MD and the intermitent failures. Full program achieved.
Still need a short access, later today or tomorrow morning, to retrieve and TREC our tested samples.
This was our last test-beam time of the year, so many thanks to the H6 beam support team!

Outgoing Parallel: ATLAS ITK PIXEL (Andre Rummler)

(I will likely not be able to join due to a parallel meeting this time.) Unfortunately, due to lack of person power we finally did not use the beam time.

Main: RADICAL (Alexi Mestvirishvili, James Wetzel)

Equipment Installation nearing completion on the Motion Table in the H6 beamline.
Calibration of detectors in progress and checkout with DAQ software.

In image posted to the Indico page for this meeting, RADiCAL module is shown on the Motion Table with MCP for timing reference in approximate position (to the right hand side). 2cm x 2cm trigger counter just out of beam, in preparation for insertion between the MCP and RADiCAL Module. Beam direction is incident from right-to-left in this image.

Preliminary RADiCAL data taking is expected later today (3 Oct), to confirm operational readiness, followed by data taking (4 Oct).
After discussions with SPSC, beam will be electrons. Initial beam energy 100GeV.

Incoming Main: ATLAS AFP TOF (Week 41) (Tomas Komarek)

  • Main objective: tests of new PicoTDC module for AFP ToF
  • Secondary objectives: testing of ToF equipment that operated at the LHC, test of new iteration of first stage amplifier design
  • Preferred beam properties: any hadrons > 50GeV, at least 2x2 cm for good coverage, high rates are not a problem
  • We usually are in the middle of H6B, right after the telescope (not using it)
  • Needed equipment:
    • concrete block
    • rack
    • 1 – 2 normal tables
    • movable tables (1 bigger, one fine PI stage)
    • many electrical outlets (~15)
    • 1 ethernet cable running to the control room (was present long-term in the past)
  • Typical experiment layout:

  • Beam Parameters:

    • A few measurement blocks (a ~40min) High intensity
    • Narrow beam (2-3mm) - Intensities ~ 10^4
  • Other comments:

    • At least one planned beam stop (~40 min) per day to change prototypes

Parallel: ATLAS TILECAL (Tigran Mkrtchyan & Giulio Usai)

  • Successful installation and operation of our latest on-detector and off-detector electronics (DAQ)

    • Maintained and repaired some of the existing components
    • Initial struggles with new HW delayed us with beam data-taking
    • Reached an operational state at the end of the first week
  • Higher, more efficient beams allowed us to catch up with the lost data-taking time

  • We completed our standard program with energies from 5 to 150 GeV

  • Runs composed of:

    • ~11M positrons
    • ~4.3M muons
    • ~3.5M hadrons
  • More feedback once we start taking a first look into the data.

  • For the upcoming week, we’ll be in close communication with the BI team to arrange the beam time.

    • Looking forward for the negative wobbling configuration allowing high energy beams of ~300 GeV.
    • New and very interesting studies lined up with the high energy beams.
  • We would like to thank the SPS coordination, NA physicists (big thanks to Maarten!) and all the personnel involved for giving us the opportunity and support to perform our activities with exceptional beam conditions.

Incoming Main: ATS XCET (Week 41) (Maarten van Dijk)

Test aims to test a series of new elements for the XCET detectors, also known as Threshold Cherenkov counters. We will compare an existing XCET with new elements, exchanging the mirrors such that the efficiency of the new parabolic mirror can be tested in-situ. Preparations for this test are ongoing, and so far it looks like all is on schedule for the beam test.

Incoming Parallel: STI (Week 41) (Francesca Galluccio)

We will start installing on Wednesday and we plan to be ready for commissioning by the end of the MD on Thursday.
