Mobile Data and Adapters

1. Arriving in Switzerland

1.1 Mobile Data

Switzerland (”CH”) is not part of the EU. It means that roaming will work differently depending on your SIM card provider. Our advice is to check your provider conditions before travelling. If you do not have free roaming, then we advise you to turn off your mobile data before crossing the Swiss border to avoid surprising costs.

You will still be able to use the wifi at IdeaSquare, the CERN hotel, and most of public coffee shops.

1.2 Plugs and adapters

Power outlets in Switzerland are likely different than the ones from your country: they are designed for three-pin plugs (image on the left).

Therefore, the EU most-common two-pin plugs will fit without any problem. Take care that two-pin plugs with a large circular base -usually used by laptops- may not fit the tiny “diamond” shape.

Consider taking an adapter with you to prevent any problem. IdeaSquare has adapters available in the space, but you might need a personal one if you are using your devices in other buildings.

2.3 Money

Switzerland is using the “Swiss franc” (CHF) as a currency. Beware of its exchange rate, Geneva is rather an expensive town.

You can also check if your bank is applying a transaction fee for ATM withdrawal or Bank Card expenditures.
