Description
The RADiCAL Collaboration is conducting R&D on optical materials for application in high performance electromagnetic (EM) calorimetry to address the challenges expected in future collider and fixed target experiments. The testing is performed with sampling (RADiCAL) calorimeter modules, approximately the size of a human index finger, consisting of interleaved layers of very dense (W) absorber plates and dense scintillating plates (currently LYSO:Ce crystal plates and in the near future LuO:Yb ceramic plates), assembled to a depth of 25 Xo. Readout of scintillation light at selected depths in the modules is facilitated by wavelength shifting filaments positioned strategically within quartz capillaries which serve as waveguides and penetrate through the module to facilitate timing, position and energy measurement. SiPM are utilized to detect the wavelength shifted light transmitted to both ends of the capillaries. Program objectives include achieving a timing resolution for EM showers of ~ 10 ps or less, a position resolution ~ 1 mm and the stochastic term for the energy resolution divided by energy of ~ 10% / sqrt(E). Recent results, current plans, and future R&D directions will be discussed.
