We are very excited to announce a workshop on software basics in HEP and STEM organized through the HEP Software Foundation, IRIS-HEP, and the Office of Workforce Pathways and Partnerships at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

The times for the workshop are in US Central time zone.

Over two days we will cover the fundamentals of:

Unix - shell, bash commands and scripting

Git and Github – how to version control your code and data

Python – fundamentals of using the Python language for analysis

AI in Python and AI tools  – Introductory concepts in AI, with hands-on examples in Python and an overview of AI tools and AI resources at Fermilab

This training is aimed at those who are new to HEP and want a fast-track to competency with software fundamentals, as well the non-expert self-taught who wish to ensure they do not have gaps in their knowledge.

The training material will be taught by tutors expert in HEP software. Interactive hands-on sessions  lead by the tutor will be supported by a number of helpers to ensure all participants are able to follow and understand the material.

Given the limited number of participants, all participants are expected to attend the whole workshop.

Please contact the organizers (email us) in case of any questions.

Notes for Participants

Participants are required to have their own laptop for the workshop. If you need one, contact your mentor or the internship organizers to arrange for a Fermilab loaner laptop.

To participate in the workshop, you will need access to the software described under the "prerequisites" tab. Make sure you complete the setup instruction below BEFORE the event. Should there be any questions, please ask by Email.

To participate in the workshop, you will need access to the software described under "prerequisites". In addition, you will need an up-to-date web browser.

The HEP Software Foundation (HSF) facilitates cooperation and common efforts in High Energy Physics software and computing. It organises activities  including working groups, community events, supporting projects, and helping communication within the community through discussion forums, technical notes and a knowledge base.

IRIS-HEP is a software institute funded by the National Science Foundation (USA). It serves as an active centre for software R&D, functions as an intellectual hub for the larger community-wide software R&D efforts, and transform the operational services required to ensure the success of the HL-LHC scientific programme.
