Description
Although future accelerator based experiments will have various and different requirements for their inner tracking detectors, the essential properties of the devices that will best fill these needs can be identified. Future hadron, e+-e- or e--hadron colliders will have common requisites (although to different degrees) for radiation hardness, speed, high channel density and low mass. These requirements all come from the need to push the energy and luminosity frontiers of the future machines. The present status and the anticipated future directions of R&D for detector systems able to face the challenges offered by these machines are discussed.
