Description

Multigap resistive plate chambers have proven to be the best choice for time-of-flight systems of large experiments such as ALICE, STAR, PHENIX. In the MPD experiment aimed at the study of hot and dense baryonic matter it has been also decided to use MRPCs. To reduce the number of TOF system channels it is advisable to use readout from each end of a strip. Several different prototypes of detectors with different geometries and readout electronics have been tested. The tests of the MRPC prototypes at the Nuclotron deuteron beam demonstrate a time resolution of about 65 ps and an efficiency of 99.8%. This value meets the requirements of the MPD experiment.
