I review major issues, progress and difficulties in the determination of
parton distributions in view of physics at the LHC.
I then argue that despite recent impressive theoretical and phenomenological
progress, a novel approach to the determination of parton distributions is
needed for reliable LHC phenomenology, and I present preliminary results
obtained within one such approach, based on neural networks.
