Description
F-theory so far is a powerful method to understand the strong-coupling
dynamics of D7-branes in type IIB string theory, but usually requires
for compact backgrounds a dual formulation in terms of M-theory.
Recently, Douglas, Park and Schnell argued in 1403.1595 that these
dynamics can be understood directly in type IIB. I will review the
basics of F-theory compactifications before giving a non-technical
overview over this work.
