This is the first workshop to evaluate the technical feasibility of the machine and interaction region, the detector design and the physics potential of the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC).

The LHeC is a possible upgrade and complement of the LHC which adds an electron ring of about 70 GeV energy, or possibly higher energy in a LINAC version, to the existing proton ring.
It therefore allows, with unprecedently high luminosity, deep inelastic (ep and eA) scattering to be investigated beyond a TeV in the electron-quark centre of mass system and also at extremely small values of Bjorken x.

The workshops aim, as agreed with ECFA and CERN, at a Conceptual Design Report for the LHeC by early 2010.
