Description

This NExT PhD Workshop is the fourth of a series of Workshops for Graduate students. It is open to NExT Institute staff, PDRAs and students, as well as external participants. It aims to bring people together to present, share and generate new ideas. The topic of this Graduate Workshop is "The road ahead", a chance to discuss present status and future plans for particle physics in the light of LHC, Planck and neutrino results. This will be the topic of the lectures planned for the PhD school. Two afternoon sessions will be conference-type with talks given by young members of the NExT nodes. A poster session will take place on the first day, before dinner.

The core of the program consists of a series of extensive review talks and lectures on:

Higgs experiment: N Konstantinidis (University College London, UK)
Higgs theory: D Miller (University of Glasgow, UK)
Beyond the SM: V Sanz (University of Sussex, UK)
Dark Matter: L Roszkowski (National Centre for Nuclear Research, Warsaw, Poland)
Supersymmetry: S Khalil (Zewail City of Science & Technology, Egypt)
LHC detectors and Experimental techniques: F Salvatore (University of Sussex, UK)
Cosmology and gravitational waves: C Baccigalupi (Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, Trieste, Italy)

The workshop will feature also the following.

* Research presentations by participants (talks and posters)
* A student-led discussion session (coordinated by SEPnet students)
* A discussion on Graduate School matters and their integration within GRADnet
* Plenty of time for informal conversations
* Social events like workshop dinners

The meeting is organised by the NExT Institute and sponsored by SEPnet. This event is in fact part of the SEPnet Graduate School.

Electron neutrino detection in the T2K off-axis near detector
T2K is an off-axis long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, optimised to measure theta13 and delta-cp, using a muon neutrino beam. The best mode of flavour transformation for this is to look for electron neutrino appearance, and the dominant background for such measurements is the intrinsic electron neutrino component in the beam itself. I will discuss the work being done at, and present recent results from, the off-axis near detector (ND280) to detect charged current electron neutrino interactions and construct cross-section measurements.

        Jet Observables at NNLL Accuracy
I will discuss the motivations and general idea of soft gluon resummation in QCD. Following previously formulated methods, I will talk about the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic order of collider observables, such as event-shapes and jet rates. Finally, I will detail some of the new contributions required to achieve resummation of such observables to NNLL order.

Dark Matter from Decaying Topological Defects
The topological defects which are predicted to arise when the universe undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking can decay producing dark matter particles, this alters the standard freeze-out process. Consequently this means that one can significantly weaken relic density bounds on a dark matter model by introducing defects, to showcase this I'll consider the effect of the mechanism on the Inert Doublet Model.

Probing Higgs Physics with Vector-Boson Scattering
In the standard model, the Higgs boson unitarizes longitudinally polarized vector boson scattering. If the couplings are not standard model like, this unitarization is lost and large increases in scattering cross sections can occur. Therefore, longitudinally polarized vector scattering is a potential probe of BSM Higgs physics. Unfortunately however, this potential probe of new physics is usually obscured by the large irreducible background of transversely polarized boson scattering. We show that combining cuts on two main observables is very effective at reducing this transversely polarized background, enabling vector boson fusion to provide a robust, model independent method to study Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons.
