With widespread public and institutional support, it now feels as though the arguments in favour of open access to publicly funded research have all been won. But making that research open, changing the workflows of researchers and their supporting institutions, requires a lot of effort and expertise. Open access mandates need to be matched with training to provide the necessary skills to make it happen. In the digital age, the problem is not a lack of training information, but a dizzying surplus.
The FOSTER project aims to fill the knowledge gap between policy and practice by:
• identifying, enriching and providing training content on all relevant topics in the area of Open Science
• creating an online portal of training materials and eLearning courses that anyone can use to train themselves and/or their colleagues
• engaging student associations, graduate schools at European universities, research funders and libraries to host training events throughout Europe
FOSTER is targeting a number of different stakeholder groups, including funders and research administrators. The project is primarily interested in young researchers to embed best practices of open science into their daily workflows while they are still building their research careers. These people will be the future guardians of the European Research Area, so it seems like a good idea to encourage them to embrace the principles of openness as early as possible, not least because making data open will increasingly become mandatory for publicly funded research.
The poster will show how the collected training materials are organized, mapped with learning objectives and supported by our training toolkit, so that the FOSTER training portal can best be used to integrate the provided resources into ones’ own training programmes.
