Description
The bi-weekly meeting of the LHC librarians and LCG/AA projects
Attendees: Andrea Valassi, Emil Obreshkov, Andreas Pfeiffer, Bertrand Bellenot, Hubert Degaudenzi, Zsolt Molnar, Stefan Roiser News === LCG 55a --- Released 21. July 2008, moving to new HepMC 2.03.09 (same version now for Atlas and LHCb). With it came a new RELAX dictionary. Other/new packages are blas, lapack, dcache_client, frontier_client. More info at http://lcgapp.cern.ch/cgi-bin/lcgsoft/index.py?entity=cfg_overview&cfg=55a CMT --- CMT installations are now also available in the /afs/.../lcg/external/CMT directory (was /afs/cern.ch/sw/contrib/CMT before). This will allow us to build snapshots of svn more easily and also allow better integration of CMT into the LCG/AA environment. lcgsoft.cern.ch --- A new web page with info about the LCG releases has been prepared. This webpage is dynamically produced from a database, filled from the information of LCGCMT. The database has been filled with the information for all LCG releases of the 54 and 55 series. URL http://lcgapp.cern.ch/cgi-bin/lcgsoft/index.py We will change the apache configuration such, that the page shall be visible as http://lcgsoft.cern.ch/index.py or similar in the future. Please report any problems (to Yves or me) and also suggestions for additional useful information. Please also check your packages and see if all information has been provided correctly or there are changes needed. Things left to do: - license info per package will be added - Add info in case a package has different versions on different platforms in a given release (ex. oracle) setuplcg.(c)sh --- setuplcg is a small setup script which is produced in the InstallArea of LCGCMT. The script provides an initial setup for cmt if it is run as such (e.g. ". ./setuplcg.sh"). It also takes as arguments any number of LCG packages which are available in the LCG_Interfaces directory and will provide the proper runtime environment for them (e.g. ". ./setuplcg.sh COOL CORAL"). A windows version of it can also be prepared. Please report any problems with the script. bootstrapLCG ---- bootstrapLCG is an executable which provides an initial setup of LCG software. It will download the packages "LCGCMT", "Python", "cmt" and provide a proper environment for those. From then on the user may continue downloading, building more packages through the LCGCMT environment. The binary is produced on the platforms "win32", "Linux/ia32", "Linux/x86_64", "OSX/ia32" and can be run as suche (no other dependencies). The binary is produced from python source code with the "freeze" tool. Available shortly in the external area. lxbuild113 --- lxbuild113 is currently being re-installed with a 32 bit slc4 operating system. This was requested in order to allow also future native compilations of LCG/AA software on a 32 bit system and not having the need to rely on cross compilation. The re-installation shall be finished within the coming days. The setup of the machine will be the same as for lxbuild114 and lxbuild115 with the only difference that it runs a "standard" slc4 kernel (lxbuild114 and lxbuild115 run a special "perfmon" kernel which is not available until now for 32 bit - if this is wanted pls contact me). opengrok --- lxr has stopped to work and would be very painful to port to slc4 (was running in slc3 so far) because it consists of a handful tools which need to be setup and maintained. After an investigation another tool "opengrok" was found. This is one java application which can run inside tomcat and has a very powerful and fast search tool. A first test (on my laptop) seemed to be quite successful, we are currently in discussion with IT whether the application can be run inside the "official" IT provided tomcat servers. We would need afs access for this which was planned to be installed. Once it is there another more widely accessible test will be run and announced to early adopters to have a first look if this is also found useful by developers. Round table === Atlas --- - Emil reported that Atlas is using LCG 54g successfully - Emil also reported that Atlas is using the Mac Leopard builds from the LCG nightlies and is currently able to run some simple tests. - There are plans to move to LCG 55 patches series by end of September. Some first investigations have been done already. - The status of the gcc 4.3.1 was requested. Stefan replied that at the moment SPI is trying to get the Windows/VC9 builds up and running. After this migration the next one will be on gcc 4.3.1. - A problem with the cmt pattern lcg_python_module was found in the LCG/Boost interface package - Emil will forward the mail with more details. CMS --- - Andreas reported that CMS has done some very preliminary tests on ROOT 5.20, no results so far. - Andreas also reported that the website spi.cvs.cern.ch was giving errors this morning, this was reported to IT and apparently the site is back now. LHCb --- - Hubert reported that it was found that the LCGCMT setup removes the default directories from MANPATH, Hubert and Stefan will look into it. - Hubert has also done some investigations on the latest versions of CMT. It was found that there are some issues with it. One being the "version directories" which CMT should not only find with the help of "version.cmt" or looking at the directory name one level up but also by looking into the requirements file of a package with the help of the "version" keyword inside. It was also found that the new cmt issues many more warnings than the versions before which could lead to problems. Persistency --- - Boost 1.35 is needed by CoralServer, this maybe creates problems at the moment for the CORAL builds in the "55-patches" slot, Zsolt will investigate. - Zsolt has investigated the possibility to move to the new oracle client for osx/ia32. At the moment a problem with setting up the right environment for Boost and oracle in order to run tests was found. Stefan and Zsolt will investigate. - Andrea found some Reflex changes in the "dev - HEAD of everything" nighlties slot, which currently break the COOL builds - Axel and Wim are looking into it. ROOT --- - The installation of ROOT 5.20 was done in the /afs/cern.ch/sw/lcg/app/releases/ROOT area. Any further ROOT release > 5.20 will be installed in the "release" area. Patches for the 5.18 series shall be put into the "old" ../external/.. area. - It was agreed to create symlinks for the 5.20 series from .../lcg/external/root/... to the new location to allow a smooth transition. After the 5.20 series these symlinks will not be maintained anymore and people have to pickup ROOT from the new location. Aob === - Because of the retirement auf computers in the CCC vault we have to move our webserver again to a new machine. The (virtual) server is ready, we are now in the progress of moving the services onto this machine. At the same time we hope to be able to "re-surrect" the "button" i.e. the pages to allow AA developers to create/re-sync afs volumes in the .../sw/lcg/... tree.
