The NA62 Straw Tracker has collected the first data in the autumn 2014. This spectrometer is tailored to measure the trajectory and the momentum of charged tracks from kaon decays. In this talk I will present the motivations behind the choice of a straw tracker and how the design evolved from the first ideas on the drawing board to a working detector. In particular, the specific requirements related to the operation of a large-size straw detector in vacuum will be discussed. I will also explain some of the key assembly and quality control steps performed during the detector construction. Finally, the experience from the first data taking will be presented together with the first physics and performance plots.
