Local Information

This page contains a bit of background information about the local site.  If issues come up during the conference, the knowledge will be captured here.

Access to BNL site

Upon arrival at the BNL main gate on your first day, inform the security guard that you will be attending the HEPIX workshop in Building 510. The security guard will ask you to drive over to the BNL check-in trailer, where you must present a photo ID to the security officer to verify that you are on the list of HEPIX participants. Acceptable forms of photo ID are driver's license (or other goverment-issued photo ID) for US citizens and passport  for non-US citizens.

You will receive a temporary badge that allows you to access the BNL site for that day. Please show the temporary badge to the security guard before you drive away. You should also receive a temporary parking permit for your rental car. Ask the security officer for a permit if you are not offered one. At the HEPIX registration check-in desk, you will receive your HEPIX workshop badge. The HEPIX badge will allow you to access BNL the rest of the week. Present the HEPIX badge to the security guard upon arrival at the main gate. You don't need to go to the check-in trailer again (unless you lose your HEPIX badge or forget it at your hotel!). Place the HEPIX badge in the badge holder (provided during check-in) and wear it conspicuously at all times while at BNL. The conference badge has a clip and a lanyard to help you meet this requirement.

Parking

You may park at any properly marked parking area, except those restricted to administration, handicapped, service or emergency (fire/police/ambulance) vehicles, which are clearly marked. Suggested parking lots are clearly marked on the maps below.

There will be signs near the parking lots to direct you to the meeting venue.

As the road comes to an end, you will be facing the Physics building; parking can be found to the left, right, and across the street from the building.

Route from BNL main gate to Physics Dept building and parking

Signs will be posted with directions near the meeting venues. An additional map of the BNL campus and the location of the Physics building is available here. You may also request a copy of the BNL site map at the check-in trailer.

Meals and Coffee Breaks

Morning and afternoon breaks will be provided at the conference venue. Participants can go to Berkner Hall (the BNL cafeteria) for lunch (5 minutes walk from conference venue).

Social Events

The HEPIX reception on Monday evening, October 12th, will be held at EastWind, a well-known catering and events venue in eastern Long Island. EastWind is located in the nearby town of Wading River and is a short 15 minute drive from BNL.

The HEPIX dinner on Wednesday evening, October 14th, will be held at Lombardi's on the Bay, a well-known Italian-American restaurant with a presence on Long Island for the past 40 years. The restaurant is located in Patchogue and has panoramic ocean views and striking sunsets. Lombardi's on the Bay is approximately a 25-minute drive from BNL.

A map is available here.

Suggested Local Restaurants

There are two small towns near BNL, Port Jefferson (a 32-minute drive to the north shore) and Patchogue (a 24-minute drive to the south shore). Both have a well-defined walkable downtown area with plenty of (some free) parking and a cluster of restaurants, pubs and theaters. Yelp lists numerous establishments with community-based ratings for Port Jefferson and Patchogue.

A short list of other nearby restaurants recently patronized by the RACF staff and found to provide quality meals at an acceptable price is shown below. In all cases, we recommend Google maps or GPS for driving directions, if you are not familiar with the local roads.

Wireless Access

Conference key to access wi-fi will be provided to participants before the morning session throughout the week. Contact the local organizers if you need assistance.
