Description
The very high intensity proton drivers contemplated for neutron spallation sources, neutrino factories or muon colliders rely on injection of H-ions. In existing machines, the ions are converted into protons in a thin foil but the highest intensities would require lasers for the charge exchange. The theory of the stripping mechanism by resonant photo-ionization via a broad Stark level is discussed and addresses especially the question of the finite momentum spread of the beam. It is applied to a 2 GeV ring and the experiment performed on the 800 MeV beam of LANL is reported.
