Description
The first proposal to re-use the LEP RF hardware for building a high-energy proton linac at CERN has been made in 1996. Since that time, that proposal has attracted the interest of an increasing number of physics communities and the design has evolved in consequence. Moreover, similar accelerators being considered for many different projects worldwide, the required studies and technological developments are already taking place in numerous laboratories and collaborations have been started. The potential applications and benefits of a Superconducting Proton Linac at CERN will be described, the present design will be presented and a proposal for a staged realisation will be sketched.
