Description
During the years 1996-1999 the 'Proton and Ion Medical Synchrotron Study' (PIMSS) was held in the PS division under the leadership of Phil Bryant. The results of this study have been used by the TERA Foundation to propose the creation of the National Centre for Hadrontherapy (CNA), that will feature three treatment rooms where patients will be treated with beams of protons and carbon ions. In 2001 the Italian government has created the CNAO Foundation to realize such a centre in Milano, and in July 2002 TERA has been given the responsibility to prepare, by September 2003, the specifications and technical drawings of all the components of the synchroton and of the medical beam lines.
The four contributions, lasting about 25 minutes each, will concern:
(1) the rationale of hadrontherapy and the clinical results obtained with protons and carbon ions,
(2) the layout of the centre and its construction and future use,
(3) the technical choices made in the final design of the synchrotron and of the dose delivery systems,
(4) a description of some crucial components, and in particular of the injection chain and the RF system.
