Participants
  • Derek Mathieson
  • Doris Chromek-Burckhart
  • Thomas Baron
  • Thomas presents the current specs of the communication hub module (mainly specs for the future push notification service and its application in the MyCERN context). See backup slide for details
  • Some questions are raised:
    • How are carriers chosen?
      • Users can subscribe to the channels they are interested in
      • They can also choose for each channel to receive individual messages or summaries (option will probably target only some carriers: effectively summaries make sense on email, but not on SMS or on the web portal)
      • Carriers and summaries are selected per channel
    • Will all notifications be displayed on the web portal?
      • Yes all notifications targeting the user in channels (s)he subscribed to will be displayed on the web portal
    • what is the definition of a message?
      • Title, body and recipients for the time being
      • Specifications will be refined later
    • Why not allowing acknowledgements for group postings?
      • If technically possible, could make sense indeed for cases like official communications
  • And some comments were made
    • Since e-group targets make it difficult to know who actually receives a message, sensitive information should be sent only to individuals
    • The multiplication of channels may soon make it difficult for a user to select the information they are interested in.
      • Creating a hierarchy of channels may help.
      • A channel could be dedicated to the advertisement of new channels
    • The service as currently described allows very limited filtering (by channel), there may be needs for a more advanced filtering system.
      • Could be introduced by adding more attributes to the messages or channels, which will describe with more details its relevance for various user communities. Users would then be able to filter content according to multiple criteria
        • Such attributes could include for example: level of criticality, communication targeting various CERN statuses, targeting specific buildings etc.
        • Such attributes should be common to all CERN services for the system to work efficiently
        • [Introducing a taxonomy to filter messages orthogonally to channels is currently considered for the second version of the notification service]
      • The hierarchy of channels mentioned above may also help in providing more filtering possibilities, but this filtering would only be two-dimensional while the attributes option would allow multi-dimensional filters.
      • The detailed study should list the use cases for such an improvement, study the various options and their technical feasibility.
